2024-11-08 03:15:48 +0000 UTCTo say every citizen can vote is already false, though. Citizens living in US territories can't vote for president. And obviously in any given state, citizens living in the US but outside that state can't vote in that state, and citizens living outside the US can only vote in that state if that's where they last lived before moving abroad. But even if you narrow it down to voters within a state, many states deny voting rights to citizens in prison or even jail, as well as citizens with past felony convictions. Can't remember if any states also deny voting rights to citizens with profound mental incapability or psychosis requiring inpatient care. Basically, if they already have any of these restrictions, an amendment to the state constitution saying “every citizen” would either remove those restrictions, or codify them such that they couldn't be relaxed by legislation.

Can we do anything to prepare for the incoming schedule F changes like monitor certain positions? Heads of departments? etc etc.. It's going to be utter chaos and it's going to all start happening immediately upon inauguration... Sitting around twiddling my thumbs feels like knowing that an earthquake is coming months ahead of time and just doing nothing to prepare.

2024-11-07 07:13:05 +0000 UTCEach country has its own immigration laws, so it wouldn't be possible to go into much detail. The broad strokes, though, are: • find out what visas are available, their requirements, and their processing times • find out employment prospects for employment-based visas • consider visa pathways, that is, what's next after that visa, does it lead to residence and citizenship, can it be renewed indefinitely, or will it expire and you'll have to leave • stay up to date on all of this, it changes over time, and may especially do so in the face of a significant immigration spike from the US • relocation and immigration are expensive, start putting money aside
Graydon Armstrong
2024-11-07 07:05:55 +0000 UTCI wouldn't count on any reasonableness past January 20. Get some mifepristone now if you can, and hopefully nobody ends up needing it. You might also consider an IUD or implant if you don't have one already, or getting it replaced early if you do have one. Birth control probably won't be so quick to be outlawed, and hopefully won't be at all, but who the hell knows. I just wouldn't count on it remaining available indefinitely.
Graydon Armstrong
2024-11-07 06:57:50 +0000 UTCIf you think you might have to leave, you need to be putting together specific, well-researched plans now, before things get bad. That means figuring out visa pathways, employment prospects they might depend on, processing times, and probably doing that for multiple countries, because if there starts to be significant emigration from the US, you can expect other countries' policies to tighten; the US has too many people for other countries to absorb everyone who wants out. Just 10% of just the LGBT population of the US would double Canada's already-high immigration for the next 4 years. You may have more luck with internal migration to California or New York, where visas aren't an issue and there's safety in numbers. However, you'd still be subject to whatever federal law bullshit comes down the pipe.

2024-11-07 06:28:21 +0000 UTCIn *most* cases, though, you can only get a citizenship if your parents were citizens either born there or naturalised. Some countries may grant *visas* based on grandparents being citizens, but if they moved away as a child, supporting documentation may be difficult to obtain even if they're still alive, and may be nearly impossible if they aren't.

2024-11-06 23:41:06 +0000 UTCIn this exchange on Mastodon https://floss.social/@jgoerzen/113436734585487762 , I commented that Biden and Garland didn't take the fascist threat as seriously as it deserved. An attorney replied, saying: "As a lawyer, sometimes our training causes analysis paralysis. Trump plows right through it. While lawyers try to figure out a strategy within the system that they are trained in, someone from outside, who commits an act that ignores that system or that exploits the weaknesses of the system, can leave lawyers not knowing what to do. That is a general statement. MG totally dropped the ball. But, I suspect there is an element of "what the hell do we do with that?" going on. I've watched pro se people totally flummox lawyers because they aren't following the "system"." Biden is a lawyer, and it struck me that he was excellent at working the system (eg, getting the IRA passed) but totally flummoxed with those that tried to work outside it (eg, dealing with the filibuster, etc). Do you think others in the legal profession are flummoxed also?

2024-11-06 23:37:46 +0000 UTCSo is the Filibuster the only thing stopping Republicans from passing whatever legislation they want?
