Rapid response thread!

Tell us what’s on your mind, what you want to hear covered, what you have questions about!

Sooooo many news items this week

I like to think of it as messages to rank & file politicians & enablers. If you are shady, we’re building precedent that it’s not acceptable in public office despite the fact that we keep allowing it in the private sector. Feds have sovereignty over state & will push into oversight from a fed level whenever we want. Those brought to us by the dirtiest of tricksters are willing to risk more because there have been no traditional consequences that still matter to either the electorate or their peers. Still no censure or sanction for Gaetz & Co for their dumb “who’s sleeping with the most interns” contest on the friggin House floor? Even worse (to me) is private settlements using taxpayer money for wrongdoing.

Spending work hours watching TV and on the golf course?

I like to think of this case as a huge chance to destigmatize or at least discuss kinks. Like, if governments would feel free to indulge their D/s or other BDSM combo in their private time, only with competent enthusiastic consent from their partner(s), maybe they’d quit trying to coercively Dom the world. Similar to any other social movement and civil rights. It’s a theory of mine.

dddebz

They’ve been denying due process for regular people while expanding it for the government especially for far too long.

🥱 NYC always thinks they're news worthy

Diddy do it? I think Diddy Did it...

I had the same thought about the bribery case but we are going to have to wait for the indictment to be unsealed to do this properly. As you have said here we are committed to providing legal analysis beyond the headlines and I want to be sure that we are working directly from the charging document rather than guessing along with the media from the available information

Matt Cameron

Thank you for reminding me! I nearly forgot about this. There is of course an explanation and I would love to provide it

Matt Cameron

We will definitely be covering this when the indictment is unsealed! I just feel like it's not really an OA story until we have that

What’s the point of the Leahy law, seems like it’s completely optional and unenforceable.

These law and order candidates might as well send out, "save the dates", these are the days I'll be in court trying to repudiate the feds who are trying to regulate me to state Prison for the omission to not fail to implicate my self in the decision by me of state and or federal crime commission. Or words to that effect.

Resident Stevil

That's the wild part. Everyone involved in the case from the jury to the prosecutor called for him to be released. Even the victim's family came forward. It really came down to the inherent racial injustice of the political and legal systems. He is known to have been assuredly been innocent. The one person that could have done anything, ignoring SCOTUS, was the governor who dismissed the board who had been out in place by the prior governor to investigate evidence. His execution date came before his hearing date and they killed him.

Pulsar Pulsar

That might need to be it's own series at this point lol

Alex The Apologetic (that his name is too long)

One thing that really really baffles me is that I am totally willing to believe that he was guilty, and regardless, with the mishandling of the murder weapon his conviction should have still been overturned. Idk. Maybe when you dig really deep into the evidence, the screwup isn't that bad, but still I really want this explained!

Alex The Apologetic (that his name is too long)

The NYC mayor being indicted just now would be a good one. I don't know anything about it, but he's of course, claiming it's a witch hunt. https://apnews.com/article/aoc-nyc-mayor-eric-adams-investigations-419eb7135ac7d52edbf32f7e45d0f5da

Michael Morrisson

Marcellus Williams, an almost certainly innocent person, who was executed this week after SCOTUS failed to stay his execution. This case had evidence that the prosecutors used peremptory challenges to remove potential jurors based on race.

Shad Riley

California just passed a law banning smart phones in schools. In loco parentis would be an interesting topic—although there may be too much other stuff going on

Alex jones liquidation - will it really happen? What might happen to his show?

KeepingThePlatesSpinning

This whole thing has been building and building... what is rapid response for if not for the biggest US city's mayor being indicted?

MaasNeotekPrototype

They can't not talk about Eric Adams, the entire saga around him is genuinely the stupidest politics I've ever encountered.

Viktor Arthuis

Also, Children’s Health Defense (RFK Jr.’s antivax org) is talking about a federal case about fluoride in water and seems to think they’re winning, but I didn’t see any recent coverage of it in not-RFK Jr. sources https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/fluoridation-risk-kids-landmark-decision/?utm_source=simpletexting&utm_medium=sms&utm_campaign=defenderbreakingnews&utm_id=20240925

And as a bonus, how are things like "who becomes mayor if Adams resigns" decided? City law? State law? Looking across the country, what kind of different systems exist for filling vacancies in elected offices, what are the most unique/weird (for laughs), when have they been relevant in recent history?

Aaron Greller

I'm in NC and would love a discussion of the evidence for the claims against Mark Robinson. Is it as compelling as it seems? He is threatening to sue CNN over it.

Deanna T.

A Trumper I know was sharing stuff about HR 7909 and how our representative voted against a bill that would “allow ICE to deport sex offenders that are in the country illegally”. Seeing that all of the no votes were democrats, I assume there’s more context, and I’d love to hear Matt’s thoughts. But I don’t know how widespread this is, so it may not work for the show

Kelly Burke

Oran Routh was charged with one count of of possession of child pornography and one count of receipt of child pornography. The details alleged include multiple distinct collections on different devices and multiple separate communications where he solicited it. In this age of over-prosecution for more minor crimes, why might the prosecutor pull punches in this particular case?

Drew Vogel

Adams, but leaning into the show's core competency more than just reading news stories. What is the current state of campaign finance laws? Are there any pending cases that would undermine them, and/or have recent SCOTUS rulings on bribery weakened any of the laws that would be relevant in Adams' case? What is the law behind the news, what elements will they have to prove in order to convict him of anything?

Aaron Greller

Following up from my previous question: what Official Acts could a future president do that would be illegal, but morally inconsequential, but more importantly hilarious, that might shame SCOTUS into moderating their idiotic stance on immunity? 😁

Alex Cruise

The charges against Trump and Vance in Ohio.

Tara Churchill

You're talking about Eric Adams, right? Sitting NYC Mayor getting federally indicted is definitely worth discussing

If you can pronounce Themyscira, you can pronounce my name, Cira

Eric Adams goes to jail??!
