Serious (not serious) question: someone's response to the question was that Dante "didn't accept Randall's offer of cash even though he left it on the counter." or something to that effect. But what if Dante was hiding behind the counter with his girlfriend and just left loose change and a note on the counter? What is one of the regular "coffee and news paper" people happened to be Randall, who's under 21, and he leaves the correct amount for a 6-pack. Did he "sell" it then?

I missed the answer portion because my mind drifted away thinking about how many people were randomly screaming CLERKS! CLERKS! IT'S CLERKS! as though prerecorded Thomas could hear them.

Going with C. Asking for an ID is obviously not enough: like, cool, but did you look at the birth date on the ID? Not knowing he was a minor is not an excuse; that's why you have to verify. D just cant be right. There's no way a business owner would be liable for any crime committed by an hourly employee. That leaves C. Dante literally did not sell him the beer. Having money thrown at you simply cannot be considered a consensual sale. I refuse.

Couple of things after last week's unbelievable fantasy warping.
It wasn't beer, but it was cigarettes. And Randall is the one who sold them to an obvious child while Dante was out of the store.
BUT, if we have to follow the fact pattern, Dante's best defense is "I'm not even supposed to be here today."
Like Thomas said, the best answer is C. Dante didn't sell the beer. The "transaction" wasn't completed.
A. Doesn't matter because just asking for the ID is meaningless. If he asks for the ID and ignores the customer is underage, is that ok?
B. Doesn't matter because ignorance isn't an excuse. It's on Dante to verify.
D. I don't know how this is relevant at all. If there's a subsequent business fine, maybe.
I really hope Dante called the police and didn't just put the money in the drawer.
Go watch Clerks, Thomas.

C is the best answer because it negates criminal liability for his lack of a voluntary act or omission, irrespective of the mens rea. This is significant because selling to a minor could be a strict liability offense.

This is essentially the same situation as if Randall snuck into the store, took a beer, and left money on the shelf where the beer was. The answer is C because Dante didn't perform the transaction of selling the beer to Randall.

Another fictional universe, this time the Viewaskewiverse, home of all Kevin Smith movies.
A. Who cares if he asked? He didn't verify.
B. Randall is Dante's lifelong best friend, as he works next door at the video store, he knows his age.
C. Unless Dante had the just leave money here sign up, he did not sell the beer, Randall took it. As Dante was not on the roof playing hockey, he didn't have the sign up.
D. The owner never shows up, Dante wasn't even supposed to be here today.
The answer is C because the sale was not completed by Dante.

C: Dante did not complete the transaction of sale. Dante was also mentally distracted because the lock on the convenience store shutters was stuffed with gum and he was not supposed to be there that day.
