Arrested on Her 22nd Birthday. She Didn't Know She Was Undocumented.

Episode 1013

Today, we get to meet Azul Uribe. Azul lived most of her life in the US as a devout Mormon, doing her best to get by in a sea of Whiteness. She even made jokes at her own expense about being undocumented. That all changed when she was arrested at age 22 under bizarre and very unlucky circumstances. She was put in ICE detention. Treated terribly. Strip searched multiple times. She then found out those jokes... weren't. Despite being a college student, Azul faced deportation from the only home she'd ever known.

Join us as we hear Azul's fascinating and heartbreaking story, in all its raw humanity. And we learn more about our immigration system, and its raw inhumanity.

Did we get an F Bomb at 45:45? Appropriately used of course.

This was great. Also I think Thomas needs a virtual assistant!

Navi Girl

Azul is amazing. I can't wait for part 2!

Kait from Seattle

Seems like maybe the 12 yo called the police? Or one of their friends So glad she got thru this how she did. Its not good it happened but it couldve been SO much worse… for part 1 anyway Thank Azule for sharing her story

Reese

Good Lord, what a pleasant lady.

Agreed. The same should be said of achieving advanced degrees or licensure in fields where there are worker shortages. Such a waste just for a protectionist cudgel.

It ought to be standard that, pending fulfilling military service requirements in countries that have them, you get citizenship at 18 in any country in which you've spent a plurality of your time since age 6. What possible benefit to anyone is there from depriving you and your country from your ability to live and contribute in a country you've known as home and spent your formative years?

Graydon Armstrong

I grew up Mormon in Mesa, AZ (Phx suburb). Modar is real. It can be trained if you grow up in a population with enough Mormons. Also, Mormon face is real. Just a picture can be enough.

Austin Flake

Omg! I was undocumented for so long and this hit every part of me. I seriously love this podcast!

Love this kind of content every now and then, it keeps the feed nice and fresh and also helps humanize (for those of us that still have empathy) the abstractions that we're used to discussing

Professional-Grade In-Car Audio Guy

Looking forward to part 2. I grew up in Salt Lake City in a Mormon family.
