It just sounds like they’ve made being independent the default. You can achieve the same result in the US, just register independent and don’t vote in primaries. You can vote in the general and nobody will know how you voted. Even if you vote in a primary, all that gets recorded for you is THAT you voted, not how. All the other way seems to do is raise the barrier to picking candidates to make it more a caucus type thing where only very active party members are involved. . That’s how the Republicans have done it the last few cycles in Virginia because they want only crazy losers with nothing better to do to be the ones picking candidates. Normal people aren’t going to set aside 5 hours to attend a shrieking white hot sphere of rage convention.

2023-10-15 19:34:35 +0000 UTCAll of those things are done privately in Australia. We only worry about the candidate after the party has chosen them. You can join a party but it is a local thing for choosing the candidate. Very small.

All registration matters for is participating in closed primaries, and I suppose officially declaring yourself deranged if the registration is Republican at this point. I’ve never registered in a party, even in states where that’s a thing, I just couldn’t vote in primaries there.

I am so glad I live in Australia where the electoral commission sets out the boundaries and is completely apolitical. We have had the odd gerrymander in the past but pretty difficult to do here. Why do you have to register as a Democrat or Republican?. Why not make it all anonymous?
