It sort of is, but it's a very special type of shadow, namely a partial one where only some of the light is blocked. This knowledge also frees Thomas from his mental gymnastics trying to find a word for a more intense shadow: That's an "umbra". In passing, this knowledge was kicked into my brain 44 years ago by my physics teacher, Mr Campbell and had lain undisturbed and unused in the recesses of my brain until I heard OA the other day.
