Backer Version - Flat Earthers: A Measured Response
Added 2018-12-28 03:20:54 +0000 UTC
Hey folks! New video! FINALLY!!!!! AAA-
I will do another proper post about how things are going when it's not 3 AM. What matters is, please check this video out! I plan on setting the final video to premiere around New Years', and I've got a few changes I already want to make, so please don't hesitate to let me know what you think.
I'm really not sure if I'm happy with the music yet, so please lemme know if the soundtrack is a good set of choices and if it's balanced properly.
Also please leave a comment here or DM me on patreon about any changes to your name you want or for anything to be removed. I know there are some people who got in touch awhile ago and I'm worried I'll miss someone unless I'm reminded before the final video.
Thanks a lot, and cheers once again for your support!
I loved this video. It makes me so glad I give you money. As for the sound / music, uhhh. I don't think I can really give any advice because I'm a weirdo with weird tastes so whatever I suggest will probably not be helpful. Having said that, I think your choice of music is fine. To me, music in a youtube video should be chosen to fit whatever tone, emotion, or idea that your video is making. As in like, if you're being comedic your song should fit that comedic tone, if you're being angry the song should fit in with your anger, etc etc. I...I mean you're a talented lad, you already know this and know what I'm getting at and could probably explain it much better than I. The point is, I think you're doing what I said already pretty fine. Your choice of music never seems out of place or distracting and kinda fits with whatever point you're trying to make. The only real flaw is that I sometimes don't even notice it? I mean I hear it but don't remember it or recognize it at all. But uhh, I don't really watch your content for the music so....yeah.

I should pay more attention to Patreon. I saw the new video on YouTube yesterday and have been waiting patiently for 3pm today so I can watch it, and all this time it's been available here.

I didn't really notice the music, so I can promise it doesn't distract from the video.

Hi! Bit late for a comment, I realize, but I figured I'd take it on anyway to. . . develop the habit, I dunno. But I thought the video covered the range of arguments nicely, didn't poke fun where it didn't need to be poked, and was quite cogent in its arguments. The end wraparound where you talk about the really interesting bit-- the philosophy behind refusing to accept what you're told simply because you've been told it, wanting to know more and think skeptically and scientifically-- is a really good one, and could do with a bit more attention and development, but that's the only constructive critique I can offer at the moment. As for muzak, the whole HBomb "series" has been pretty eclectic in style, and I quite like how that's reflected in your music choice, as well. Thanks for the excellent vid!
2018-12-31 02:16:12 +0000 UTC
Aww, you could have made many more arguments. Everyone definitely knew that the earth was spherical dating back to at least 500 BC, and we were accurately able to measure its circumference around 200 BC from differentiating the length of shadows. The reason why Columbus was laughed at was not because everyone believed that the earth was flat and he is the only one who thought it was round, but rather because everyone knew how big it is, thus deeming the journey impossible, and he was severely underestimating its size. Looking at the stars, in the northern and in the southern hemisphere you see completely different constellations, and the more latitudinally you move, the greater the difference. The curvature of the Earth is easily observable from looking at the sailing ships, they will always disappear bottom first. The shadow of the Earth during a lunar eclipse is always circular, no matter where or when you observe it.
I am kind of curious what their arguments would be in regards to all of this, and as someone who specializes in star formation, what would their arguments for the formation of the solar systems be, but not enough to watch their videos.

this was the first hbomb video that i thought added nothing to any conversation. way too long for how little it attempts to tackle, just limply prodding at flat earthers for the dullards they are. philosophytube tackled this subject in a much more interesting way in less than half the time. was hoping we'd dive into more of that in this video but got a visual gag instead, that was when i just stopped watching it.

Really well done but not my favourite video of yours. I don't understand the point of Chapter 4, it kinda leads nowhere. Also I think the video could be trimmed down if you removed the character driven jokey bits that feel more like outtakes (the telephone hurting your hand, the story about your mate's broken printer and so on). The second half of the video is spot on and really well done. Also I think the music is just fine. Thanks and keep up the good work. Very glad I became a patron.

It sounds great, but you were incorrect not to include a track from Kubrick's 2001. You know the one.
Also I backed you and a few other of the objectively best youtubers, thus breaking my Patreon cherry, in not insignificant part to spite the people boycotting Patreon for their dumping Sargon. So haha the Invisible Hand saves the day again. Enjoy your whore's gold.
Seriously, keep up the amazing work, this made my week and I have no doubt I am not alone. You have put something positive out there and made the world a better place. Thank you Hbomb :)

I rudely slid into your Twitter DM's with this yesterday (sorry), but the one big thing that's probably been suggested is an audio warning for the T slur coming up. I have a couple of friends who listen to your videos when going to sleep, so it's possible that someone who's likely to be hurt by that might not know it's coming up.
Also this is the first time I've managed to watch the backer only version and I'm really interested in seeing the changes between this and the final version.

I don’t get why a flat-earther would spend time trying to disprove the curvature of the earth. If we lived on a disc wouldn’t the edge still look more curved the higher you got?
I tried it with a dinner plate. I felt my mind expand. The gears of reality started turning in reverse. I got gravy in my eyes.

Great video as always! I hope that my patreon pledge doesn't get used as proof that you're in on an international conspiracy (haha). I've enjoyed your channel since the first measured response videos, the production value and effort that goes into each one has never ceased to impress me.

When you reference “Flat Earthers use the same four points over and over again” and “That scene from West Wing” I wish you would elaborate on those two points, it feels like I’m missing some key information. Other than that, great video!

The music I noticed most was the frantic, discordant kazoos under some of the wilder flat earth claims and I thought that was a nice touch that was not as distracting as one would expect a kazoo to be, and it set a fun mood. I don't know if that was the old video game soundtrack you mentioned but I think you should definitely keep them.

2018-12-28 20:04:05 +0000 UTC
Hell yes, I loved it. Patreon money well spent.
Just one thing: Not sure if it's because of copyright reasons (and the video is already very long), but you included less clips about the subject you are responding to this time, and I kinda missed them
2018-12-28 19:59:07 +0000 UTC
Loved the music towards the end especially, and the whole lunar landing bit was a great break from the rest of the scientific stuff.

2018-12-28 19:40:43 +0000 UTC
I also didn't find the video condescending in any way. I don't think you're saying everyone will inevitably become Marxists as someone suggested here but that people will hopefully figure out what is the real problem in society. But honestly I didn't think this was your best video, this is my first backer edition that I've watched so maybe I'm used to more streamlined content, but I did think it dragged a lot at the beginning and somewhat in the middle, with the end being a good length (and I enjoyed the intertextuality of LeftTube).
2018-12-28 19:14:02 +0000 UTC
Hey Harry, I thought the intro and up to chapter 3 of this video wasn't very good. I didn't think it had a proper introduction, it just started off by watching the flat eaters video and pausing to make comments. Its not the longest section obviously but its not the most engaging. I think that Chapter 4 could actually be a very good introduction, or at least elements of it. One small tidbit is I think the part where you push the globe off your desk would be perfect, if followed up by the titlescreen (where you show your name).
2018-12-28 19:11:18 +0000 UTC
Hope you're doin okay, gosh. I think you're doin great here - I know some folks have mentioned the joke about multiple takes perhaps drawing thin but I've always found them funny in a, like, reassuring and humanizing way. Also the music sounds fine?
Samael
2018-12-28 18:42:18 +0000 UTC
1. The bit about the fighter jet does feel too long
2. Up is not jump is amazing, but why did you need him when THAT FUCKING DESK IS THE REAL PROOF OF WAVE PROPAGATION? (this isn't a crit really it's just annoying. Wobble)
3. Chapter 9 is too loose, too much actual painful content, there isn't a lot of breaking down what they are saying (because it doesn't actually make sense) but then there should be a *lot* less of it or it's just a dunk video and isn't actually funny.
4. The conclusion lead-in anti-vax joke feels extra and out of nowhere? See the dunk video point, they are a bottom barrel target. Which would be fine but it doesn't really land and you just seem slightly angry and mean spirited about it.
5. Jokingly grappling with the desire to dunk on Mark Sargent after a whole chapter of chaos dunking on flat earthers feels out of place.
6. Liked the political content, but it continues a trend with some of the other asides where you have a few other video concepts here which have not yet crystallized yet, and you are either unaware, making this video worse by setting them up for the future, or don't feel confident making a video about despite being on your mind. a 20 minute Hbomberguy video talking about climate denial, ending on a marxist reading of the problem and a silly joke would be awesome! but it's much less likely if the ending stays as it and that's not awesome.
7. Sobek jokes are kinda funny, but ironically don't build a solid foundation OR work toward a single point super well. Unlike the pyramids.
8. Less meandering self-deprecation please, it feels less of a surprise when it's punctuation, particularly early on.
The music was good, but likewise suffers for the length by being more sparse than it should be and it doesn't really feel like the mix keeps a single tone or move with the context of the video, which leads to some parts feeling more extraneous.

I thought the music was quite pleasing to Lord Sobek.

2018-12-28 17:34:45 +0000 UTC
I thought the music was great (especially the effect in the train shot at 41:59). If I could suggest a change it would be that the second Mark Sargent bit (in the conclusion) is a little gratuitous and feels out of place. I think the closer the first sequence surrounding Olly is with talking about his actual points (say 47:00 on, because the skeleton fall is hilarious) the better.
2018-12-28 17:30:22 +0000 UTC
Whatever you do, PLEASE keep the kicking the globe bit where you break the prop. I woke up my neighbors by laughing so hard. Also, don't worry about long run-times. I usually put all your 45+ min videos in a playlist and have them run in the background when I work.

I actually liked the music at the beginning. It made for a nice juxtaposition to the usual music coming in right after. I thought the music was pretty good throughout personally.
2018-12-28 16:22:35 +0000 UTC
I love your videos so very much, even though we so profoundly disagree on things! Like I'd say the comparison to believing in a beneficial free market is perfect, but from the flipside. If you go by "books" and "data" and "experts" other boring shit you find out that 1.5 billion people have been lifted out of poverty in the last 50 years by the free market, and that standard of living on earth has skyrocketed along with the rise of globalism: https://ourworldindata.org/extreme-poverty. BUT if you just use your eyes, you see that your friends are struggling and the infrastructure in your neighborhood is subpar, and that the people around you are very afraid and dissatisfied - the equivalent of a flat earther just going by what they see. It's a trait that all humans share, including me - we tend to believe what we perceive with our five senses rather than what experts are telling us (I mean, look at my diet). But make no mistake - the economic boom in Bangladesh (once one of the most infamously poor places on earth) isn't being driven by Marxism - it's being driven by jobs and factories and exports: https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Cover-Story/The-rise-and-rise-of-Bangladesh. The well-regulated free market is, according to every piece of data available to us, the greatest poverty-fighting tool in the history of the species.

The drums in some of the tracks behind you talking are too busy in my opinion. Not enough to be distracting but enough to not quite mesh with your voice if you know what I mean. Otherwise this was a good video! Perhaps a few too many instances of the "I'll cut this word early for comedic effect"

2018-12-28 15:48:28 +0000 UTC
i really liked this video, but the conclusion at the end seemed rather condescending in the sense that people’s conversion to radical marxism is inevitable. it very much comes across as a shameless recruitment attempt to me. thanks

Needs more Eric Taxxon! I'm loving all of Little Spoon atm. I did think that you don't need the background music during the meat of the segments tho as if I notice it the music it's distracting unless... are you subliminally making me like your videos with things I don't even notice! This is how the reptiles get you! The Jazzy bits are a good fit and add a nice "clowning" feel which I thinks fits your reptilian purposes.

i heard my city named (perth) and yelled and that's a summary of how i (and all australians watching) feel towards this.
also know a few gold-hoarding, cult-y flat-earthers through other mates and it definitely seems at least partially anti-establishment in nature. especially as few, if any, flat earthers actually have the education in science to understand the world, so it becomes a case of ignorant people raging against the dominant social machine because something in them can't stand moving with the grain of wider society. in other words they're a rebrand of other conspiracy theory groups, just a different type of nut. good vid anyhow.

Your conclusion is spot-on. The degradation and alienation engendered by capitalism produces an isolated and bewildered population craving to make sense of this complicated world and grasping for answers to questions most people can’t even articulate. Conspiracy theories give confused and alienated people the satisfaction of feeling correct and the security of knowing the truth without having to do the hard work of research, suffer the anxiety of doubt, or engage in the necessary struggle to change the world and make things better. They allow relatively privileged people the opportunity to LARP as dissidents and revolutionaries while preserving their conventional opinions and bourgeois lifestyles. Conspiracy theories fill in the gap left by an absence of an organized and explicitly socialist opposition to the status quo. They’ve become an outlet for dumb people to feel smart and live out their childhood hero fantasies while escaping from the horrifying cruelties and brutalities of the modern world. They’re a refusal to accept the enormity of the challenges humanity faces and instead encourage a retreat into keyboard pontificating and live-action role-playing.
With that said, what struck me as most interesting and relevant is the symmetry between flat eartherism and other conspiracy theories, specifically far-right propaganda. All conspiracy theories share the same format; a playbook that all crackpots and con artists pull from. The symmetry is twofold: flat earthers and far-right propagandists employ the same rhetorical tactics/theatrics to recruit (e.g. “Flat Earth Deniers Fear the TRUTH!”, “Leftist PWNED by FACTS & LOGIC!”) and they have the same ideological structure (i.e. a cabal of (((elites))) hiding the truth and misleading the masses). First, you made a great point calling out how that obnoxious guy was acting like Ben Shapiro in accosting innocent bystanders and then declaring victory. This theatrical display of debate dominance can be called performative rationality – the style of rational argumentation in lieu of its substance – and is a staple among reactionary charlatans (e.g. Jordan Peterson). Second, because it fosters the same paranoid and credulous mindset, its easy to see how flat eartherism can segue into fanatical bigotry. A shadowy cabal of elites (e.g. Illuminati, Masons, Rothchilds, Soros, Globalists) has long been a placeholder for Jews. I am not surprised that one flat earther turned out to be a Holocaust-denying neo-Nazi or that the community has rampant misogyny. It’s fun to ridicule these ludicrous conspiracy theories but they can actually be quite dangerous because they operate in the same way (and suck in the same unstable people) as fascist conspiracy theories like “White genocide” or “Cultural Marxism”.

I'm relieved you added the reflection about the existential motivations of flat-earthers in the last ten minutes, but I remain critical of your approach of the subject.
When it comes to flat-Earth, I feel people are often focused on disproving flat-earthers and/or making easy jokes about them. I believe the problem is much larger. The success of flat-earth can at least be attributed to the ignorance of basic epistemology (as for a lot of pseudo-sciences), which should be taught in our school systems. The world-wide economic policies of austerity have deep impact on many aspects of our life, raising inequalities including regarding education. In a public well-funded education, the bases of sciences (including social sciences) should be taught, it should be an individual right in the same that everyone should have access to fact-based sex-education.
This is aggravated by how science has professionalized itself in the last centuries and how experts are given a huge place in media and in governments. This has created a divide between Those Who Know and the reste of the populace.
Science should be presented as a debate, with specific rigorous rules, granted, but accessible to anyone. While what we have now is more and more vertical transmission of knowledge that might appear condescending and dogmatic. (And I know I'm part of the problem, being a researcher and a teacher in a public-funded institution.)
Given those elements, laughing at flat-earthers often seems to me as a form of classism. I had the priviledge of receiving higher education, and to have the background necessary for understanding the arguments for a globe Earth: not everyone got it. It does not mean that flat-earthers should not be disproven, but that the problem is deeper that just that they're stupid or bigoted or so.
Flat-Earth is a class problem: flat-earthers (as well as many pseudo-scientists) feel disempowered and excluded from the scientific debate, so they carve their own strange and incoherent niche. I believe this marxist approach of the problem should be given a bigger place in the debate. I wish you had considered this angle in your video.
As always I love your work and reflections and I'm eager to watch your up-coming videos.
Apologies for any weird sentence, English is not my mother tongue.

I think i'd cut the skeleton gag, maybe shorten the one where you push the globe off the desk, and maaayyyybe the first one with the phone? I think you explain its presence enough when you call the scientist (names don't stick in my head, i apologise lol).
There were a couple of smaller gags i can't remember right now that i felt knocked me out of the narrative. I just think your timing is a little off.
2018-12-28 08:54:24 +0000 UTC
Ok upon the second viewing, the music is fine tbh. I think it's totally appropriate ^_^
I do think some of the jokes are a bit... pointless? There are maybe a few too many. Were you trying to imply you're rusty? (Which i don't think you are btw) I think if you figure 2 or 3 to keep then that'd cut a little time down and make it a wee bit better.
2018-12-28 08:50:15 +0000 UTC
You could make one of the captions for the table wobbling "wibbly wobbly table wabley". Other than that inane bit of commentary, good job! That bit about "no direct flights to/from Australia" makes me fuckin mad though. I bet that guy just swims everywhere.
2018-12-28 08:47:55 +0000 UTC
It feels like you’re too down on yourself in the beginning. The jokes are funny, but the bit with the phone is an extension of your claim that you are just phoning it it in, and that’s pretty close after pointing out the fact that you haven’t made a video in a while. I don’t know what I would cut, because like I said, the jokes are funny, but you may want to streamline the beginning by cutting some of that.
2018-12-28 08:36:07 +0000 UTC
I largely didn't take notice of the music, which is good in this case i suppose, since it didn't take away from your words or the visuals UNTIL that god awful rap came up and once you started the bit where you dunked on Mark Sargent and the music became intense and grating, which i got the feeling that was what you were going for

It’s funny you mentioned the sound in the Post Video, as I was remarking to myself while watching it that it was really good all round this time. Something about it struck my ear nicely and it made for excellent accompaniment. I don’t know why, but it made me feel somewhat at home with the video.
The Mark Sargent recorder bit was bloody perfect by the way. It’s somewhat funny to me that many people seem to be remarking on it negatively, or even saying they couldn’t tell where it was coming from (very odd to not know where sound’s coming from when you’re watching a YouTube video).
The cameos were real treats, by the way. Up is Not Jump was sorta perfectly robotic (couldn’t tell if that was purposeful or awkward acting, but it worked brilliantly regardless), and the Olly crossover bit was absolutely beautiful, even having already seen it in his video, and especially clever was the addition of the macroscopic map view.
A really great addition to the series and incredibly entertaining. Here’s hoping you make good on that promise of more videos next year, mate! Happy New Year!

This one feels a lot looser and less well-paced than your recent work, so I feel trimming cuts and script could benefit it; also the botched takes get a bit stale after a while, I feel the kicking of the globe should be the last one.
The music could be louder and maybe be incorporated more into the theming and atmosphere of sections. Halcyon Dreams is probably your best demonstration of that sort of thing.

Firstly, really good video! Felt like almost like a diversion from your usual content and into something more fun and whacky. A few points of feedback;
Granted you said it with a huge pinch of salt but I'd be very cautious from a political standpoint about seeing anything really positive about flat earthers and their conspiracist friends. I know you like ending things on an optimistic note and all but still! There are alternatives positive/optimistic ending arguments eg. say lots of people are forming more systemic analyses of capitalism itself drawing radical conclusions, there's lots to be hopeful for and that people like flat earthers are a sign that there's an incredible openness today to all kinds of ideas which also includes socialist ones etc etc.
The end is a little bit clunky in that you basically reiterated the same point twice in a row ("They're right to think something is wrong" etc). I think you could cut like a minute out there and you'd get the same point across.
Those two minor points aside, really enjoyed it! Looking forward to your videos into 2019, enjoy your New Year
EDIT: Forgot to add that I didn't see anything really wrong with the music. It blended into the video completely.

1st watch thru feedback ^_^
Music seems fine to me. I didn't notice it for the most part unless you drew my attention to it (that awful rap will haunt my dreams) which is how i feel like backing music should be? Will listen for that more on my second watch.
Re the gags, i found them hilarious on the whole. I feel like the skeleton one was maybe a bit too much, just because the others were at least relevant to the topic of the video? So if you were to take any out i'd recommended that one.
Probably the only major crit i have is that i feel like you've slightly buried your lede, but this is a great video regardless so I'm using "major" rather loosely, lol. I reckon you could have made the latter half of the video entirely about your concluding point, that people who believe flat earth, or alt med, or insert-thing-here, have all figured out there's something up with the way the world is going atm and have just clung to the entirely wrong solution. The rest of the video was great, as i said, but this was when i really properly sat up and paid attention. It's been a while since i've watched Olly's video on the subject so he may have covered this in more depth. If not, though, i'd honestly love a continuation of this video where you maybe delve into conspiracy theories through that kind of late stage capitalism framework, because i'd actually never considered it before. It makes it much easier for me to understand their (and certain family members') behaviour.
Will report back once i've watched it again. ^_^

Might be worth bringing in religion. Flat Earth puts the planet at the centre of the universe; fitting with creationism and it's 'interesting' take on the role of science and evidence.

So far the biggest complaint was that the U2 tangent didn’t have a Negativland reference. What I’m saying is that you need to lay Negativland’s version of I still haven’t found what I’m looking for with kazoos and an angry Casey Kasem (RIP) over the rant.

this is honestly one of my favorite videos of yours now. i quite liked the music, though i will say the only bits that really made me take notice of them were the track playing over your conclusion starting at about 47:10 (which i would love to know the name of so i can look it up, dont know if thatll be in the description when its put up), and the ridiculous kazoo track playing over you making fun of mark sargent. otherwise, the music didnt really stand out to me, though i think thats good because it helps me to focus better on what youre trying to explain. thank you for the video!! im looking forward to next year ^^
edit: silly of me, forgot to mention why the track at 47:10 stood out to me: i think it fits the tone of that section VERY well, and gives off a very soft and hopeful vibe, so if nothing else, definitely keep that one because i think it accents what youre going for perfectly.

I really liked the video, but I feel you should include more examples of non stop flights, if there are any, like if you had more examples that would be more convincing. Even if it's just flashing up some examples of other flights like that. I know there were a couple, but I feel like including more that they didn't talk about is a way to show you aren't just directly responding to their individual examples, but that you are responding to their entire claim. I might be wrong, it's just a gut feeling.

I can't say anything abt the music but the subtitles at ~16:43 felt placed a bit off, got my eyes all mixed up multi-tasking the reading and the listening bit distracting. I think it was because they faded instead of appeared, minor and very pedantic complaint

The first 3rd needs a solid cut down. I found it pretty slow. I know that's where most of the jokey-jokes are, but it'd honestly run smoother with a few minutes chopped out. Otherwise, enjoyed it. Love, an Australian (who according to flat earth theory, does not exist).
P.S: My partner is a climatologist, and she was outraged by the Flat Earther claims you featured...

2018-12-28 05:15:15 +0000 UTC
I disagree with everyone: Knock more things over, the first have is too tight, but so is the second half, and one time you said fighter plane when you meant spy plane
i think all the music was good, the only time i ever noticed it was when you tossed on kazoo dragonforce, which i think means that it never detracted from your point? and the kazoo dragonforce was there as a gag, so it's fine
2018-12-28 05:11:26 +0000 UTC
IIRC from his last stream, that recorder music is a multi-part cover ofThrough the Fire and the Flames lol
2018-12-28 05:09:16 +0000 UTC
Also the segment at about 11 minutes in “i don’t have any place to lecture anyone about decorum” feels like a place that could be trimmed.
2018-12-28 05:08:29 +0000 UTC
I also agree that the first half felt a bit flabby and a bout of a slog, but the second half felt much better paced.
Although i love the whole photoshop/deepfake gag, it felt a little long and out of place. If you leave it in I would remove the “i am not even done making my notes for the video and decided to make a test” you should just go from “let me get my mouse,” to doing le deep fake.
2018-12-28 05:07:26 +0000 UTC
It was really great, but DEFINITELY add an AUDIBLE trigger warning before the transphobic slurs. I was on a different tab at the time, so I missed the warning. It wasn't triggering to me specifically, but it might be pretty bad for others.
2018-12-28 05:06:39 +0000 UTC
i'm a super fan of the vid but i think the music in most of the vid is way too low and it feels like a scripted ramble. idk i feel like i was spoiled with how good Eric's music was in SLA 3 and how well it fit, and i don't get the same vibe and it feels kinda empty.

Excellent video! I’m currently experiencing some minor hearing problems so take what I say on the music with a pinch of salt, but I liked it a lot in terms of style! It suited your aesthetic really well. However, the flutes when you’re Dunking On Mark™️ were very quiet to me compared to the rest of the audio, you could maybe consider turning those up a bit? But other than that it was super great!

Seconded, I really love seeing the shitty takes and messed up jokes, but I do think they might have been a little overdone in this one. I think it’s worth trimming the fat on those.
2018-12-28 04:52:17 +0000 UTC
The music sounds pretty good to me. It didn’t really make an impact on me, which is to say I didn’t really *notice* it until the part where you were owning Mark Sargent. During that segment the music was a little too loud and stress inducing... but that almost feels like a feature not a bug
2018-12-28 04:48:31 +0000 UTC
So my overall impression is that this video isn't as tight as your best stuff. I feel like you're letting individual bits drag on too long and it's affecting the pacing. Especially given how bad the pacing is in flat earth videos, I feel like cutting down your own portions of this video to the best bits will help to increase the contrast.
And I want to clarify, I feel like for the most part pacing is something you're particularly strong at, so it's not so much that the pacing in this video is *bad* as that it's not up to your usual standard.
If you're looking for things to cut, you might consider limiting yourself to just one "I broke my prop"/"this joke didn't work out/"I did a bad take" joke. I think there were like three of them in this one? And it got a bit tired.
OK now to go back and pay attention to the music.

Comments on things I liked: 1) that you pointed out the mistreatment of women within the movement pretty respectfully and in a way that I hope some people might be able to hear, and 2) that you validated that something is very wrong while encouraging further investigation of said thing. My favorite part of the video was when Sobek was like "for the luls my dude." Feels good, feels organic, thank you.

around 26:00 it might be worth pointing out that the shortest distance between two points on a sphere is a "great circle", which is how flights are routed. and coincidentally while this "great circle" appears as a curve on most map projects, it appears as a straight line on an azimuthal projection. so sydney to santiago via san fransisco or los angeles is only a *slight* deviation from the most direct route.

Two comments: 1) you seem really frustrated the entire video, and I don't know if you were going for that, but I definitely noticed it, and 2) GOD that guy with the shirt is SO HARD to watch. I nearly skipped through the video about halfway through that part because I was so uncomfortable from the secondhand anxiety you mentioned, so I would recommend cutting it down significantly.

Overall this video is another excellent gem; in regards to music, I laughed a LOT at the Dragonforce recorder bit, like to an almost unbearable degree. I do wonder if there's a tonal dissonance (uh, excuse the pun) between the music AND that segment. Perhaps being in a place of legitimate amusement whilst you're figuratively tearing that guy a new asshole is not terrible (being it was mean, but I think appropriately so). Besides that, the general musical ventures of this video, and really your most recent ones, are nice. It's experimental and not same-ey. Nothing has particularly piqued my ear one way or the other outside of critical listening, so I think things have been fitting nicely enough.
Thanks for the quality content <3

Sooo thoughts. You pointing out the wobbly table was genius, I couldnt look away. Having an actual 'measured' response for once is nice because flat earthers aren't really the type to make folks angry, they're an easy target. That's neat. Since I'm currently dying of a cold and can't sleep, this is a nice surprise. BUT OMG HBOMB. The pharaohs were the physical embodiment of the god Horus. Clearly no research at all was done. 0/10 wouldn't recommend. Seriously though, I loved this

Nice to see I'm not the only one with a broken sleep rhythm :D
I live in Germany tho, so it's actually worse 🙈😂
Edit: Now that I've watched it not too tired to articulate thoughts afterward:
I generally really like the music, I find it difficult to explain why, but it got a right and nice feel about it. Just in the Conclusion Bit where you start to rant the music actually was a bit hurtful for my ears, it supports the ehm content in the bit well, but I think the high notes are a little bit too high and somehow distorted (is that the right word?) so it makes it not nice to hear.
