2017 Doctor Who Special Analysis is now up for backers!

Thanks to everyone for backing me, and I hope you had a good holiday break!

This was meant to go up between christmas and new years but it sort of ballooned out as I decided to write more and more for it. A toy prop I bought as a joke for a future thing (taking a longer look at Moffat's run in general, a sort-of sequel to the sherlock video) ended up arriving in time to make it into this video - see if you can tell what it is!

There's no credits in this one because they would be almost a third of the length of the video itself. In light of this, I'm making some changes to what the patreon backer rewards will be after this month (and making a proper post about the changes ASAP), but don't worry, the credits will still be in the next video coming up later this month! I hope! Seriously I take so long on these I'm so sorry

This'll remain unlisted until I'm as close to certain as I can that the BBC won't flag it. If you can't watch this video it means already got flagged, aha.

Now to go update the soy boy diet spreadsheet!

Now that a full season of Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whitaker's version of Doctor Who has aired (and a holiday special), I'm really curious what your thoughts are on it. To me it seemed to really avert the "cyberwoman problem" that you were worried about.

thanks for this post

love you ty for this

Right around 8:55, "The Doctor assumes this glass lady thing is based on a real person," I know you reference the episode later in your video but maybe the Doctor thinks that because it was kind of one of the major surprises in Moffat's Library episodes? I mean this whole special seems like a Moffat wank so why not?

Man, I love your Videos. I'm really excited for the conclusion of the soy boy diet btw.

Jürgen

aw mate i missed you. i'm gonna watch it later though cause i haven't seen the episode

I'm offended by proxy in the name of good taste, that you do not like Torchwood. It's fine I guess, you cannot be perfect in every aspect I guess.

The Snarky Lesbian

yeah, Moffat making jokes about casual misogyny is a real glass house innit? The man makes a crack at 60s sexism when he's responsible for some of the more misogynistic writing in new Who. Remember how in the Library episodes the Doctor constantly tells River to shut up? And when "it's a woman" is meant as some ominous "God help us all" joke in that one cold open (IIRC)?

William Tongue

I burst out laughing at that ending, great video as always. I always found it hard to put into words what made me dislike post-tennant doctor who when I loved it beforehand (I still haven’t watched the latest season and honestly might not bother), but I look forward to being able to just point them at your video and go “that. That’s the problem.”

Taitenator

'Exploding violently into light and fire while transforming into Jodie Whittaker.' You're right, who among us wouldn't want to go out like that??

This is a really good video that got at the heart of a lot of problems I had with the actual plot of the episode--although the main thing I complained about to anyone who would listen for days after I watched this special was the casual misogyny on the part of the First Doctor that you mention. Given that this episode ends with the Doctor regenerating into a woman (and Time Lords changing sex/gender between regenerations has been established as a pretty normal thing) it's absolutely fucking bonkers that we the audience are expected to believe One would be mired in the ideas of gender and sexuality (oh his ~shocked face when Bill mentioned having "experience with the fairer sex" made me want to grab a pitchfork and march on Moffat's house) common to the era when William Hartnell's episodes were written. Even if he makes comments like that in the old episodes, this is a canon that has been retconned to hell and back, often by Moffat himself. It's infuriatingly transparent that this is an attempt to say "the old show was so sexist, unlike me!" -quote from Steven Moffat, the man who can't imagine women as anything more than cardboard cutouts with tits. It's the same thing he was doing with Rusty the Dalek, as you pointed out. Anyway, thanks for making the exact video I needed today. I'm remaining cautiously optimistic about Chibnall, although frankly anything that isn't Moffat-style masturbatory bullshit will be refreshing at this point.

This was really spot on. You really have such a great ability to vocalize beautifully the horror some of us feel while watching some of these Christmas specials. I'm happy this is the first video I got to be a patron for. I really hope Chinball stumbles across your Sherlock video.

gah

Spotted mistake: You say "Children in Need" when I'm sure you mean "Comic Relief" (it even shows the Comic Relief logo on screen when you say it)

Superb video! I agree with basically all of it. I cannot tell you how much I loathe Moffat era Dr who. I practically shouted at Capaldi (who was criminally wasted - utterly unrememorable doctor frankly) to hurry and die at the end of the episode so we could get over this damn era. I am very cautiously optimistic at Chinball. Most of his Doctor Who episodes have been bleh (and I utterly forgot the fucking cyber woman thing - christ), and I inevitably know that of the series isnt like 100% fantastic from the off all the fucking miserable virgin basement dwelling alt-shite social rejects who think soy products are destroying western civilisation will use that as PROOF that femenism has killed Doctor Who yada yada. But yeh, I'm just thankful we don't have his dreadful characters and god awful plots and tortorous long winded multi season arcs which were a disaster and his awful, awful, awful gender politics. And that look on your face at the end! Never have I seen such a sad and despairing little face! XD Bravo.

To be honest, at least Torchwood made me feel for the characters... pretty low threshold for television, but it had character development... [Spoilers for last season of Torchwood] even if it did end with the super problematic "Bury Your Gays" trope. Because even if it was good representation to have Captain Jack and Ianto being in a healthy relationship, it was a pour choice when to kill off Ianto and the whole loud weeping over your dead boyfriend trope was at its height... see also Cloud Atlas (I say loving Cloud Atlas with all my heart.) All this to say, he's better than Moffat. I have hope.

At one point you refer to Karen Gillan's character, Amy Pond, as "Emily Pond" and I admit that might be a joke about Moffat's characters being unmemorable? If that's the case ignore me, but if it's not intentional, you might want to fix that.

GeminiMakesArt

Well if it does end up being rubbish at least it'll give you plenty of new material for a video.

Gabriel Costa (Hired Sword)

what a great time to not be a dr who fan but what a great time to be your sponsor! everything i know from dr who comes from your videos and i can honestly say i feel really bad for you all. liking a show - or wanting to like it - despite its shitty writing is something i went through with another show and dont wish it on anyone. hopefully the writer evolved from the sexy cyberwoman. its been a couple of years at least... right

Calysto

you accidentally called amy 'emily' i think, also have you tried slapping the tardis until the button starts working again. good video thanks

Man every time one of these videos comes out I am once again surprised at how good the comedy bits are. I really need to sit down sometime and try to analyse this stuff to figure out how to steal everything.

Nichtschwert

I have been waiting for you to drag Steven like this again for ages Hbomb!

I thought I’d seen all the angles on this episode, but you actually raised some interesting ideas that I’d not thought of, I was too distracted by the misogynist first Doctor :(

GingerAnimator

Christmas came early this year! Or late. Depends on your perspective wimbly wombly etc
