What Makes An Action Scene Good?

Trying my hand at a Video Essay about movies.

If you guys like this sort of thing I can do some more. I'm trying to carve out a space where I can talk about different art and media in whatever way I feel is appropriate or interesting or entertaining. I like testing the limits of my style and focus.

Let me know what you folks think and I'll keep it in mind for the future. Even if it's a definitive 'no never do this again', it's worth doing it to find out!

I love it! Very well-written and thoughtful! (I feel like I'm grading an english essay. -_-)

Really enjoyed this. Would love to see more like this and your FO3 retrospective.

I consider the Avengers movie to be entertaining, but not great. I saw it and didn't think about what kept it from greatness, You make a good point about the sloppiness of certain action directors.

I liked it. Even for someone who's only curious about film theory, the video was captivating. I will say, though, that I found it a bit basic for my liking. For example, the idea that implied action might be more effective than explicit action seems obvious to me (because I must've encountered it elsewhere on Youtube or in an article). But your point on zooming until the frame is dominated by a tiny pistol to give it impact is new to me. I suppose I prefer your essays to be more specific and technical. Your comedy would help make technical and abstract topics more palatable for someone like me who never studied film.

Oh, good stuff (even if that Whedon-pun was THE WORST JOKE YOU'VE EVER PULLED, sir). In all honesty though, I prefer your thoughts on film when you're on the Smug Film Podcast. Simply because I find discussions about films to be more interesting than video essays. But hey, more content about cinema either way is win-win. Oh, and another example of someone who does great comedic action stuff: Edgar Wright.

Ruben Rydell-Sandgren

Also, great video as always. I'm assuming the sequel to this will be about how practical effects beat CG effects in every way imaginable, but that's just a guess.
