My lathe has been keeping a secret...
Added 2024-08-22 14:00:10 +0000 UTC
So I'm finally doing it. After 10 months I'm finally addressing the spindle play in the free lathe... And I could hardly believe what I found. Any guesses? The thumbnail is a good hint.
Also curious to hear what you guys think of this different format? Thanks as always for the support!
Enjoy!

On the format change: it works, but it’s not as relaxed of a vibe. And like others have said the booth voice-over videos really have a wonderful, bob ross-ness to them, with a more relaxed vibe. Even when feeding the BoS.
I love the project videos, though, seeing the drafting and then the execution. Especially live seeing what you do to get the tolerances that you want to hit. You’re getting tolerances off of a lathe that I’m used to seeing in centerless-ground parts (in HS I worked in my dad’s shop, and we’d get in runs of surgical drills back from heat-treated that were all over the place 10-20thou differences it seems like, but those were cranked out at high volume by cnc lathes and they knew they’d be followed up with grinding of the shafts, so maybe that was designed in tolerances…)

Thanks, Tony. And fair enough. Just a little burnt out on my traditional style so aiming for something I would want to watch myself.

Nice! Sounds like a great learning experience for everyone. And thanks for the feedback. This isn't exactly what the final form will be, but I'm working towards it!

Thanks! yeah I think I have a long way to go to get where I want to be, but I think it's a start!

Gotta say I'm not as keen. I really enjoyed the quiet, measured, and dry-humored style you started with.

I enjoy both versions! This style may wind up with broader appeal in the algorithms of the interwebs. Though the original format stood out as something fresh because of its Bob Ross feel - no hurry, no rush.
And great timing, as my high school shop just inherited a 1440 and some of my students will be along for the rebuild and refresh ride with me this semester!

Genuinely love this type of content, and genuinely educational, i know what your trying to reach as a type of content, at least its almost there, but cracking job with it!

New is more personable and down to earth, like I'm there with you sort of. Old format is more "instructional"-style, like I'm taking an online shop class. I like both just fine. I lean slightly towards new though.

it's rare that the solution is so simple! I'll get the rest of the lathe there in time 😁

thanks! yeah it's definitely a drop in quality. even after all the mixing I do on the audio. still some bugs to work out (and more stylistic changes 😁 )

Thanks Jeff! (on both accounts). I'm not sure how I caught the bearing orientation actually. That might have been pure luck!

oh those talking to the camera shots were anything but off the cuff. harder to do a voiceover when you cant look at the script! 😆 this isn't quite the final form of what i have in my head (and it's only a hazy image really). one of the struggles i have with shop VO vs booth VO is they have a VERY different audio quality. i find it pretty jarring in my preliminary editing so i decided to go whole hog on shop audio this time.

an even easier fix I'd say! You'll get that motor sorted out as soon as you need it, don't worry 😂

I appreciate it! I feel like the change is more for me than anything. I want to make videos I would actually want to watch and that has been waning as of late. Still appreciate getting others take on it as well 😊

Thanks, Mike! I have mixed feelings about it as well. It was a little easier on the editing and scripting side and is generally a vibe i prefer in the video I watch personally. This isn't quite the final form of what I am going for (is it ever?) but a doable first attempt. Now to just figure out what to do next 😂

I was able to find the belts (or at lest ones about the right size) on amazon through D&D powerdrive). Motor bracket is the same, just didnt occur to me to use a pry bar instead of my arm meat until later 😂 Thanks!

That is incredibly satisfying that you could take it apart and put it back together correctly and that fixes everything. Just beautiful. And really exciting that you now have that incredible accuracy you were hoping for in the first place, at least from the head stock.

I will say I like your original format over this new one. The sound quality was certainly better, and it felt more...idk, planned?

Excellent catch on the backwards bearing! That should be a great lathe, after you finish the rest of the repairs. As for the format, I'd have to say I prefer the older/narrated version, but I'll watch either way.

I must say, I was a bit worried when you told me you were working on a new format, but I'll admit - I'm not disappointed.
I strongly agree with the points Michael made though. I really like the new format, but I think a mix of old+new is the best way moving forward. I'm sure this is something you can hone over the coming videos. I think your "brand image" are the planned ahead, highly polished shots, and in some places the VO sections would probably work better.
With all that said, I'm really impressed with your ability to do the "on camera persona", its definitely a skill in and of itself. Speaking off the cuff is something I struggle with heavily, so kudos for that.
P.S. seems like you were hiding your singing voice from us 😁

I really want an identical (clone or official) lathe to this now as you are providing a video recorded "how to" guide for it lol.
Glad there was a silly reason why there was so much play in the spindle. I had the same issue on my lathe and was dreading forking over the cash. The tapered bearings were installed correctly on mine, just were not preloaded at all. As i was taking apart my head stock to get to the bearings i noticed the same play before i ever took the nut loose. Put new grease in the bearings and preloaded them and all my axial and side to side play disappeared as well. Great feeling. Now if i can just settle on a plan to put a beefier motor on it to increase its abilities, id be one happy hobby machinist lol

I like narrated videos more, but that is partially down to my hearing being crap so booth recordings will always be a winner for me, not that your shop mic is bad, but you do get more 'room'
Also, I think I prefer the longer intro - I like spotting fun looking bits from the open when they come around in the main drag.

First, amazing news and well done! I personally love Slip 2000 725 Cleaner Degreaser for . . . cleaning and degreasing . . . and also ultrasonic work. Everything needs oiling afterwards since it's very thorough, but it's water based and exceptionally great at what it does.
Second, as requested, feedback on the new format. I have very mixed feelings.
Pros: Likely faster to produce, your face is on screen more (for recognition and so it's harder to steal content), and the energy is more akin to what YouTube and other sites tend to expect.
Cons: It feels more abrupt. Less polished. It's less relaxing and the tone is just different. It feels very off-brand. Plus, no Engineer Voice.
Comment: You reminded me of Bob Villa and This Old House more than Inheritance Machining. And Bear Grylls. And Steve Erwin. And . . . you get the issue. It's likely a good format because it's so common, but it also feels "just another" to me.
Suggestion: If you like this format, particularly for time savings in post, I suggest a more traditional voice over for the lead-in for each episode, then you can continue the shop narration live as you do in this video. I think that would maintain your brand and the tone we've come to expect, while leveraging the benefits of this format.
I'll watch no matter what you end up doing, of course, and there's some consistency bias in "I liked the old way!" but I think a hybrid of the new and old ways, as mentioned above, is the ideal path forward.

That cotter pin hammering so close to the ways… you are brave!
I waited 4 months from Hardinge to deliver the belts, I had to cancel, then 2 scammers in Amazon and 1 in EBay I finally found them in China…
I am not sure how the motor bracket is done on your knock-off (ahem) “Clone” 🤣 but it should be 1 bolt on a hinged bracket you can pry up and hold with a block of wood.
Great job as always! Can’t wait to see what will you do to the ways if anything, to surface ground mine is about $2K 😢

The format is great! Great to hear you explaining about why you do things to your wife and the part relating to your previous projects is great too.
It’s the mother of all side projects! What’s this now? Part 6 of operation making lathe super duper precise once figuring out it’s not?
