A Wooden Box... But Make it Metal

Hey Everyone!

Shout out to Rowan @noengineerhere for finally overflowing my shame capacity of the Box of Shame with your fanmail. The box said, “Yum!” Now, to make room for some more of my future foibles… Let’s make a bigger box!

Well done Brandon, another cool idea!

Jeffrey Spoor

Another video coming soon? I signed up for Patreon and then you haven’t made another video yet! Hope all is well with your fam!

Gram Shick

That's always the most fun reason to make something 😁 Thanks, Jeff!

Brandon Sander

Another great project. As someone who also just tries things to see if I can, you made my brain hurt on this one lol. Great job once again Brandon!

Jeffrey Spoor

Nah. this is just the box to it! 😂

Brandon Sander

This is like your Antikythera Mechanism!

Dave Cannon

A love hate relationship! 😆 Thanks, Jesse!

Brandon Sander

I've never heard of those! I'm burning through my old blades pretty quick so that might be the way I go! Thanks, Pierre!

Brandon Sander

Are you saying I would be making more donations to the BOS? 😉 I like the idea though!

Brandon Sander

Or at least tried to 😆 the sander helped a lot with that!

Brandon Sander

Been in the works for a little bit 😁 Thanks Adam!

Brandon Sander

It is my crown! haha

Brandon Sander

Thanks, Jim!

Brandon Sander

They certainly make life a lot better 😁 The stain was actually Watco Danish Oil. Craig was raving about it and filled me a bottle from his stash. Hard to argue with the finish I got! Oh! And the dehumidifier in my shop has been one of the best investments so far! Thanks as always!

Brandon Sander

My pleasure. Thanks a lot, Rob!

Brandon Sander

Paige always makes the shop a little more interesting. I need to get her in there just to give me someone to talk to while I goof around 😂 thanks as always, mate!

Brandon Sander

Somehow I still find wood less forgiving. Maybe my standards are too high 🤷‍♂️

Brandon Sander

One of those things I have no control over 😆 thanks!

Brandon Sander

These are awesome! 😂

Brandon Sander

Cheers to that! 😂 Ironically i stumbled upon some inlay dovetails (in wood) when doing some google searched for inspiration.

Brandon Sander

Hahaha, loved it. I feel with you. Wood is beautiful, but so imprecise. :-) Thanks.

Jesse Karthaus

As always an awesome video. I love mixing wood and metal in my projects. I have to say I never got this fancy. Have you ever heard of the Starrett variable pitch band saw blades? They handle various thickness well without blade changes. I thought it was crazy the first time the sales person told me about them but the name alone convinced me to give it a go. They have absolutely amazed me. I have gone from using 4 to 5 blades a semester to 1 to two a year. Here is a link to them. https://www.starrett.com/products/band-saw-blades/bi-metal/intenss/i99303

Pierre Alie

It would be very interesting to see you reproduce complex Japanese joinery in metal. I know your fans and the new BOS would love it.

JM

Wood 😱 You did a great job reconciling the 1/8" world with that of ten thousandths

James Riordan

That box just might be fit for a crown!

Tony Peden

Mighty fine looking box!

Jim Ruddy

Great video. Was just thinking when I watched Rowan's latest upload that you're going to need a bigger box of shame (think I might have even commented that on his video). Really love the brass inlay in the dovetails!

Adam Wesley-August

Ah, Craig and Mrs. Machining to save the day! Truly wonderful folk As a true believer in oil finishes, I am disappointed in the use of stain. As someone who *does* oil finishes, you made the right choice. Also, having done a number of oxide finishes, they are the greatest pain to ever pain if you want a "perfect" finish. I'm staring to think my greatest skillset is complaining bout surface finishes. Well done, and since everything lined up, you kept the precision where it needed to be! Just, you know, careful about that humidity.

Michael Faragher

I loved this video. Also, thanks for turning me on to Rowan’s channel. I became a follower there as well. I plan to share your video after it gets released on YouTube to a woodworking engineer friend who will surely enjoy your struggles, your humor and the excellent finished product. Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos for us.

Rob Deputy

Okay, okay, hear me out. I treat woodworking like my older cat Diesel treats his dry food - it's there at a push, but wet food(machining, in this really strange analogy) is where it's at. This video, however, was like a dry/wet food mix. Not sure that's a thing, nor do I think my cats would care for it, but it absolutely hit the spot and it's the best of both worlds. Honestly, this has been one of my favourite videos of yours in a long time. The end result is nothing shy of spectacular, and the shots of your losing your mind with Paige in the background made it so special. I've said it before and I'll say it again - 1000 patreon well deserved, Brandon. Can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Erik D. Radzius

You’re a metal worker because you like to chase perfection. I’m a woodworker because it’s forgiving of my mistakes.

Max Goldstein

The production quality of your videos sets you apart. And perhaps a slight tendency to over complicate designs...

Dean Thompson

I think you will have an appreciation of this: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxyeMcYZHq7_6b_U72z4-rQfdqc8RR7jZU Especially #12 (based on your comment about the impromptu flight lesson a clamp got!) That looks glorious!

neal richard

I've made plenty of hand cut dovetails, and it's never occurred to me to add metal to them in any way, much less three different colors with two metals PLUS inlay. Very creative! Here's to hoping it takes the rest of your life to fill this masterpiece with mistakes 🍻

Steven Bierlink

Beautiful.

Dennis Otterstetter

Thanks, Micheal! Great question. It is mostly because with the sine plate in place all the coolant ends up splashing off the table and just gets everywhere. So in cases like this I just make sure the part isn't getting too hot

Brandon Sander

Hey Brandon. Excellent video as always. Quick question about the surface grinder. I noticed that here when making the dovetail cutter and in the lead screw replacement video when making the acme thread cutter, you didn't use the coolant pump on the grinder, whereas in other videos you used to flood the grinder any time you used it. Any particular reason why?
