One Step Forward, One Step Back

Hey Everyone!

From my previous post, and the subject of the next video, got the new internal spindle mounted on the tool post grinder! Sure saved a butt load of work not having to making my own. But not everything went smoothly (does it ever?). I seem to find myself playing "electrician" way more than I ever thought I would when I started all this. But we persevered... Use case is a little vague from the pics but I'm sure some can guess what I'm into. Any takers?

I also thought it would be cool to talk about some of the common comments I got on the Mobius Cube video. If you saw it, you probably know well the struggles I had with the springiness of the thing near the end. A lot of good ideas came through. Dozens of folks suggested making custom shims to fill the gaps before clamping. Might have been a bit tedious but in hindsight probably no more tedious than working without them! Another idea that I really liked was, once the cube was hollow, cast the whole thing in either epoxy, lead, or some other material. This would give great strength for those final operations. Then the filler could be melted or dissolved away leaving the finished part. Almost makes me wish I had a time machine because this idea is genius!

In other news a quite serendipitous offer came by that was too good to pass up. Something I've wanted basically since I started this adventure. And something I don't mind driving 12 hours each way to pick up! Might have to do some highway monologuing in the next video. It's not like I wont be talking to myself anyway 😂 Let the gas station snack binge commence!

That's all for now. Have a great weekend!

I made brass rings with a set screws. That spring loop design for the carriage motor is bananas… Next time I will gut the inside of the motor and will mate a nema motor to the gears, and it will fit inside the motor body. Cheap to replace and stronger.

Good eye!

A Friedrich Dinkle 3 dimension pantograph? Looks like an early model.

Richard Kramer

Oh, the things you can do with that. Looking forward to like six repair and upgrade videos followed by a flood of neat things made by it.

Michael Faragher

Well I appreciate that man! There is obviously pressure (financially) to keep up the pace, but we are backing off here soon to a video every 3 weeks. Hoping this will give a little more time in the shop and with the family as opposed to the majority of the time we currently spend in the editing booth. Should overall make the videos better so I think it's the right move. I feel you on the electrical. I'm by no means an expert either and learn as I go just like you. It can be really mystifying until you find the problem and realize how obvious it was all along! 😆 Thanks as always!

Brandon Sander

Nah, much cooler. A Pantograph!

Brandon Sander

Pretty close! It's a Deckel!

Brandon Sander

It sure is! Deckel GK12. Making some progress on the Hardinge clone 😁

Brandon Sander

Some things are gonna have to go... unfortunately 😬

I can't wait to see how you're mounting these new machines to the walls and ceiling, so I can steal the ideas and fit more machines in my garage too... (This is why I don't have a pantograph...)

Rogan Creswick

Is that a pantograph? Otherwise looks like you're truing up some tool holders and rebuilding some motor that's seen some better days but was built to last.

Michael Faragher

Looks like a Gorton engraving machine?

Hell yeah! Keep up the awesome work! I personally don't care so much about video schedule if you're ever super worried about that. A lot of my favorite youtubers make one massive video every 6 months, so I hope you're not feeling pressured to get content out as fast as possible. I love electrical side projects because I like learning even more about electrical systems in-house. I recently did my own minisplit installation in to two rooms and had to swap a breaker in my panel for one that was rated for the emergency shutoff as well as get all the wires hooked up to the condenser unit correctly. Made some mistakes despite knowing a fair amount from youtube and personal experience about home electric (I swapped the control wires for Head 1 to Head 2 and was mystified when H1 was frozen and H2 wouldn't blow cold air XD). Every time you do one I file away some knowledge about something I might care about one day. :) Honestly I watch your channel for the stuff to learn, regardless of what it is, doesn't have to be machining specifically. It's why I like Farmcraft101, too, John's great. Anyway keep it up!

It's a horizontal isn't it
