The Cube With ONLY One Side

Hey Everyone! Decided I couldn't resist breaking away from the usual tool builds to make something just for fun; and for all intents and purposes useless. Unless of course you include the lessons I learned along the way. I'll just say, springs are bloody hard to machine....

Enjoy!

Editing in post…you thought , “how do I stop from looking like a total badass.” And then you stole footage from me standing at the Bridgeport destroying everything! 😂

Thank you so much, Jesse! Sounds like you've got the right priorities in mind 😁 good lick on the house/shop hunt!

Brandon Sander

I thought the same thing once i got into the corner rounding 😆 Hindsight is always 20-20!

Brandon Sander

😁 thanks so much! Safe travels!

Brandon Sander

😂 I swear I'm not trying to! Did you see how many endmills I broke!?

Brandon Sander

I once did a sword forging course. After two days I found out that the teacher was a professional mindfulness trainer. It was not about the sword. :-).

Jesse Karthaus

Hi Brandon. I love it, I love it, I love it. You are a big inspiration for me. I’m in the process of finding myself a new house where I can build a hobby metal workshop. And starting the machining hobby. Thank you for your really nicely produced videos. Keep up the good work. Jesse, from The Netherlands. :-)

Jesse Karthaus

Very cool!!! Might be easier flex-wise if you rounded the corners first, but not sure how that would impact setups and machining the slots. Definitely will be a conversation piece!

Jim Ruddy

Another amazing project, glad I'm a patron of this channel, must've taken you ages to do all that material removal, I'm traveling through Australia right now having lived in England all my life and it's been great and to watch your videos has made my week, always exciting when you drop a new vid. Looking forward to getting back to the "new" lathe, can't wait to see the immaculate precision that piece of art that will be capable of after your keen eye is capable of

Ok…now you’re just showing off! 😂

It may not be exactly functional, but I bet you could make a killing selling these if the were mass produced.

Matt Kosmoski

Call it a training exercise. Easier to justify. :D

Michael Faragher

It certainly would have been a lot harder without them!

Brandon Sander

Do not try at home 😂 Thanks Isaac!

Brandon Sander

When else would I get the chance to (attempt to) machine an overly-complicated spring? 😂 I'm ready for the welding pros to tell me how unsafe I am! I use those tools every chance I get! Still really surprised at how straight the die holder keeps things!

Brandon Sander

That's a great tip!

Brandon Sander

My practicality wouldn't allow more than a couple of projects like this a year 😂 but at least there are some good lessons to learn even if the end result is a paper weight!

Brandon Sander

That's the beautiful thing. Even if you've made a million things, there are still millions more to make! haha

Brandon Sander

Totally just skipped over using your shop made tools on the side project! The tap follower and rotary broach, how nice and easy was that!

Bryce de Haan

As a professional welder, you are right (at least, you will be tomorrow). Still, those were fillet welds (tacks). He's good. I've seen worse.

Chris Slaughter

This is absolutely insane. I've shown a couple other machinists at work, we're all pretty impressed! Great work, as always

Isaac Stemple

Right, I just need a moment to recover from the brain hernia this gave me whilst trying to understand it.. Okay, I think I'm good. Kinda. What a brilliant video. I absolutely love making "trinkets" for no good reason whatsoever. It really showcases the power of machining, in my opinion. P.S. Welding without gloves 😳 Good luck fighting off the comments from "professional welders" on youtube tomorrow 🤣 P.P.S. - really good to see the tailstock die holder and the rotary broach getting some use!

Erik D. Radzius

Fun looking project! For quick layup like you were doing with the printer paper - I absolutely love full page removable labels. Ex: https://www.avery.com/products/labels/6465 Doesn't really apply here, wouldn't work on a long project with coolant, but you made me think of it. It's my favorite way to lay out loose tolerance holes for a drill press.

Nick Avila

Elastic standards are fine, just not plastic. :) It was a nice diversion from all the exceptionally practical work to something just for fun. I don't recommend switching entirely, but something that has you using CAD, welding up mistakes, not knowing entirely where you're going, and elastically deforming your standards is quite unique. Plus watching all those tools you made come out without comment, I mean, that bolt was basically a clip show, was pretty darn cool.

Michael Faragher

I have done a lot of things in my life, just to see if I could HOWEVER, the thought of something like this never occurred to me haha. Nicely done
