Shop Update

Hey Everyone! No video this week so I thought I would give you a little update on what's been going on.

BTW if you like this sort of thing for off weeks/between videos let me know in the comments!

I ended up using basically all of the precious time between videos to finish up the second upright for Formula Kentucky. And it surprisingly went way faster than I expected. Where number 1 took 23 hours to complete. Number 2 was only 14 hours of work! Apparently my time estimates for camera work are WAY off. I did manage to eliminate a few unneeded operations in the process and didn't have the side projects to deal with but still a huge difference!

The swarf from this project alone made a proper mountain once swept up and filled a lawn and leaf bag to the brim. It didn't feel right to just pitch it though so I made the half hour drive to the nearest recycler (It's pretty rural where I live).  The contents amounted to 21 lbs (9.5 kg) and I made off with a whopping $2.94. Just enough to cover the gas of the trip! Suddenly it made sense why recycling pickup services are basically non-existent where I live.

With both of my knuckles completed and Craig's having been long done we all went to meet the team on campus. Got a chance to talk shop, share some team stories (I was a former member) and check out the current iteration of the race car. If there's one thing I got from the visit it's that are a really smart group of kids. Pretty much knew the answer (and more) to every question Craig and I probed them about. If all stays on schedule they will be competing at Michigan International Speedway this May.

After all this, and basically going balls to the wall since Christmas, I decided I needed a short breather (hence the missing video). Not taking the whole 2 weeks off, but rather just 1. We've  been finishing the videos the day before they need to post and that's too close for my liking. So this should give me a nice 1 week buffer before posting. Maybe we'll post the Patreon edits as soon as they are done rather than the 1 day in advance? Let me know your thoughts.

Now back to projects. I had every intention of making/buying another spindle for the tool post grinder I featured in my last video. Only this spindle would be intended for grinding small ID's. Long story short I didn't order what I would need in time (that break was too nice haha) so I'm doing something kind of off the cuff for this next project. Starting from the loose idea of a "thing" that's been bouncing around in my head for a few months. I won't give away the whole surprise but I will pose you with a riddle.

How do you make a cube with one side?

This got me thinking of retroreflectors. Short version: I was in physics and the professor offered extra credit for anyone with a mathematical proof that retroreflectors worked. I tried using 2d trig (because, frankly, I was no good at vector math) and he looked at my work for two seconds and said. "This is wrong. But you're getting the credit because you're the only one who tried." Good life lesson.

You should totally make a machinist cube, I got gifted one from a talented machinist. It now sits on my desk and I admire it all the time. It’s a cube, inside a cube, inside… you guessed it, another cube!

Bryce de Haan

When it only looks like a cube from one viewpoint??

Ed Nutting

I saw a video recently about a very inexpensive way to make a forge using mostly baking flour which creates a very low density slightly ablative foam to insulate the walls. Might be a good way to satisfy your inner Midwestern frugality and try something like casting at the same time

Micah Reid

A blog post or a vlog update is okay with me, which ever one is easier for you.

The compactor isn't a half bad idea. Would save the heaps of garbage bags haha Fortunately I have my wife to catch me when I near meltdown. And I for her for that matter It's interesting that a lot of the design is very similar. Mostly dictated by regulations. The real advancements are in the electronics and engine management systems. They've got some pretty slick stuff these days. The team is also like 5 time larger than it was in our humble beginnings. Seems there's no shortage of helpful hands for the build now!

Brandon Sander

Thanks, Jeff!

Brandon Sander

Just judging by the comments i get from past projects I think it's pretty common for folks to melt and cast their leftovers. For the rate i got at the recycler i now know why haha

Brandon Sander

You're going on the right track 😁

Brandon Sander

I may have to consider that!

Brandon Sander

Amen to that. My wife is usually the one to help me spot a near meltdown haha Just another way she keeps this channel going!

Brandon Sander

Thank you, sir! In the throes of it now

Brandon Sander

The machinist jacks are always the required content for YT machinists haha I didn't have an urgent demand for them so I figure why not make it overkill (like everything else). You are right about the "specific" part of the cube

Brandon Sander

I like a good challenge so I was more than happy to dive into that one. It was mutually beneficial haha This cube is no slouch either... woof

Brandon Sander

Wouldn't that produce 2 sides? 😉

Brandon Sander

Noted! I think I'll try to keep up with them when there is good stuff to talk about

Brandon Sander

Noted!

Love the updates! glad to see the metal being recycled waste not want not. If it’s far enough away a compactor might be a worthwhile investment. I grew up with a self employed dad. He always said the best part of being self employed is getting to chose which 18 hours of the day you want to work. That being said you can do some real damage keeping up that pace without brakes, glad to see you making the call! Curious to know do you see improvements in the cars designs from year to year? How do these guys compare to your team back in the day?

Pierre Alie

Suspension parts turned out amazing, very nice work! The cube....intriguing.

Jeff Loffert

"swarf"... Interesting, I've always wondered what happens to the chips that get thrown all over the place in the shop. With wood you can't really re-use any of it except for some filler and maybe fire starter, but metal you can melt down, so I was always curious if anyone ever saved them to cast in to new material or not. Future video maybe?

Locane

Despite the mournful wails of a Mike without a video (I kid) I guess a Mobius Strip and Klein Bottle are out. Time for a Brandon Cube?

Michael Faragher

With all that swarf left over, I'd be melting it down and recycling it myself ... much more valuable that way. Time to build a backyard melting furnace?

Gerald Quakenbush

Many people don't realize they need a break until it's too late. Burnout takes a long time to recover from. It's great to know your limits and stay within them. Plus, the extra family time will be a great benefit!

Steven Bierlink

Enjoy the break & catch-up! I am look forward to when the next video comes 'round, though!

Rogan Creswick

Out of all the machinist channels I follow on YT, I was most impressed with your jacks than anyone else's. Your cube resembles one students have to make for one of their class projects, just more specific. I wonder if I'm right. I would like to see how you made it along with other blocks as well (1-2-3, 2-4-6, etc.).

Chris Slaughter

Thanks for the blurb. You have some Fish with those Chips? Great that you can lend your time and expertise to the team. Sounds very rewarding. The Cube is looking very Stanley Kubrick…or Cubebrick? “My God, it’s full of holes!”

Rvator

How do you make a cube with one side? DID YOU GET A HYDRAULIC PRESS?

The updates are welcome. A refreshing break from my actual work. Keep them coming if they're not too intrusive for you.

Jeremy Henry

Love the updates! Please keep them coming
