WANTED: Dead or a LIVE CENTER
Added 2024-01-18 15:00:08 +0000 UTC
Being that the new lathe is quite a bit smaller than my grandfather's, I'm missing a few of the essential bits of tooling I'll need to make it useable. Sure there are issues with the lathe to address still, but never mind that. I'm going to need a live center eventually and of course I want the nicest one available. But I certainly don't want to pay the $1000 price tag for a Royal. So I'm gonna see if I can make my own! Apparently putting the cart before the horse is my middle name.
Enjoy!

At least the The BoS was fed! And the handlebar mustache was rad.

Yes, a tool post grinder would be the ticket for the ID of your tailstock bore. I bought an Aloris tool post compatible holder, to fashion a tool post grinder of sorts using a Makita palm router, but haven't worked up the courage to try it! Now I've just sold my mill and lathe, as we're moving from AK to NC this summer. Will be on the lookout for replacement machines after we get settled. Keeping the Harig Super 612 grinder though, as it's manageable to move without a forklift. If you're ever on the hunt for a Lectric-Center, another alternative is from the ATCO brand. They actually made them for Harig, and may be able to be found for a better price than a Harig.

Thanks, Jeff! I've got a plan in mind that seems to make sense. At least for the moment 😂

I've been weighing the options and thinking of going toward the latter for ID capabilities. But if I'm being honest what I really want is a dedicated cylindrical grinder 😂

Beautiful live center Brandon! I have no doubt you will work it out. Keep them comin

Just a gentle reminder that a surface grinder paired with a spindexer can make for a passable cylindrical grinder 😉 Or if you're feeling extra barbaric to your lathe's ways, a rotary tool on the compound. Looking forward to see how you tackle this one!

Thanks, Jeff! I'm weighing some options as far as grinding setups. Always been intrigued by the lectric-centers and cylindrical attachments. I'm leaning toward a tool post grinder at the moment for the ID capabilities. Which will be needed for reconditioning the tailstock bore. Not the best thing to be doing on the lathe but if I find myself using it a lot I'll be looking into a dedicated cylindrical grinding machine.

😁 Thanks as always, Mike, I love it when I get a chance to try some technique that's been kicking around in the back of my mind! There's some more banter in the full length video that comes out tomorrow but of course didn't want to leave the sponsorship in for my valuable patrons 😊

"You can bet your sweet bippy" took me back in time and "more gooder" reminded me of "More's Law" - "if some is good, more is better, and too much is just right". Looking forward to seeing how you improve the runout and cleanup of the nicks in the tailstock taper.

Nice work Brandon, even if it is a turd for the time being! Time to add a punch grinder and cylindrical grinding attachment to your surface grinder tooling! I lucked into a nice Harig Lectric-Center on Ebay recently, and really pleased with it. Capacity on them is 3"x6".

Ahh, my shipment of new details has arrived! Things like that needle bearing or using the compound to make the tiniest of changes just scratch that itch. And then you turned on centers just when I started to wonder why you weren't. Masterful. And yes, more beard = better beard, although the geometry talk was worth the handlebar. Another great video. Stay warm.
