(AD FREE) A Life Changing Filming Upgrade

After a year of filming, and 29 videos. I've had enough... Enough of my TRIPOD! Constantly messing with all the levers, toggles, legs and whatnot has really been gnawing at my sanity. So I went all out and made a ceiling mounted, 2 axis gantry with a 6 foot, spring balanced, articulating arm that can reach literally every corner of my shop from floor to ceiling. And I don't know what took me so long. I'm never looking back!

Enjoy!

Hey Richard! I don't have any formal drawings for this but i do have some scale sketches I could send you. They are missing most of the dimensions but none are really that critical to begin with. Shoot me an email if you would like a copy of them.

Brandon Sander

Are the drawings for this available? I have a riflemakers vise I built and I need a gantry like this to attach a light to so I can do detailed work in the custom rifles I build.

Richard Kramer

They actually stay remarkably still once I put them in a location. Even on longer recordings

Brandon Sander

What about brakes and locks for the gantry and arm? Won’t those creep on you otherwise?

Shao Zhang

Heck, I've impressed myself 😂 But seriously, thank you!

Brandon Sander

You've impressed me again Brandon, nicely done!

Jeffrey Spoor

😂 My list of jank setups was pretty long. I only showed a couple!

Brandon Sander

Thanks! I've played around with that actually. It does a pretty good job rolling it by hand!

Brandon Sander

Thanks! And yeah I guess I didn't consider that... more holes I suppose!

Brandon Sander

Thanks, PJ! I've already been using it for the next project and so far I haven't run into any translation of vibrations to the arm. I have discovered a few spots where the gantry will roll a bit, I think its from the weight bowing the rails on the ceiling, but that should be an easy fix.

Brandon Sander

When you realize that the setup was probably even more jank while trying to capture the jank setup with the cannon. Jankception.

Sri Ram Neravati

That’s sweet now to add some robotic actuators and get some nice smooth pans in the videos!

Alexander Ha

That is a really, really nice build. Excellent vision for usage. To bad when you upgrade the camera you will have to re-do the springs 😜

Dennis Shubitowski

Well Done, Brandon...was wondering if you would get around to this. Feels real robust and smooth. A 2 axis gantry plus the 3 axis articulation, Yahtzee. Loved the bushing press fits and tube internal supports. Should work for many years and a million subs. ~¿@ Will be curious to see if you have any wobble/vibration issues translated through the walls/ceiling or rolling due to settling. I've thought a couple of times about using a steady rest type gimbal at the camera end...a real good precision project. ;-) Also Really glad I didn't make a guess! Hat Tip, ~PJ

PJ

Indeed I could! Thanks!

Brandon Sander

such a nice build! you could use the trolley for lights too!
