Here at CYBERTEASE we support all marginalised communities, and are committed to fighting against discrimination. Our circus theme inspired us to do some research into the treatment of Roma, Gypsy, and Traveller people whose labour and culture have greatly contributed to our society, yet are one of the most socially excluded in the UK. In addition to centuries of historical discrimination, contemporary accounts of persecution are abundant, to name a few:
In May 2007 Traveller families lost their High Court case over plans for them to be relocated to make way for the 2012 Olympic village. The forcible eviction of the Dale Farm in October, 2011 at the time Europe's largest Traveller community site. And our current government's proposal to strengthen police powers to tackle unauthorised encampments.
A 2017 report by the Traveller Movement found that 77% of surveyed Travellers had been the targets of hate speech or hate crime. Roma and Irish Travellers are also disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system, are failed by the educational system, and suffer the highest unemployment levels of any ethnic group in the UK. Racism and prejudice against Roma and Travellers remains entrenched with the UK and Government services rarely include Traveller views in the planning and delivery of services.
We urge you to take the time to inform yourself about the struggles faced by the Roma, Gypsy, and Traveller communities and show support in their struggle for rights and recognition!
