162 - Why Do Christians Go on Mission Trips?

This episode is born out of current dad experiences for us and out of a bunch of good and bad faith and church experiences. Thanks for being up for personal stuff like this from time to time. I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Christian mission is rooted in the nature of God himselt. The Bible reveals him as a missionary God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), who creates a missionary people, and is working towards a missionary consummation... The religion of the Bible is a missionary religion. The evidence is overwhelming, irrefutable Mission cannot be regarded as a regrettable deviation from religious toleration, or as the hobby of a few eccentric enthusiasts. On the contrary, it arises from the heart of God himself, and is communicated from his heart ours. Mission is the global outreach of the global people of a global God. I've been on various short term mission trips and even led a couple myself. The #1 goal, at least when I led the trip, was always to serve and learn from the people we meet. Unfortunately mission trips are all too often all about the experience, the "what I get out of it." You really cannot go into a mission trip with that self centered mentality. Ironically, I've found that the more you forget about yourself and simply try to serve as best you can you actually do "get a lot out of it". In fact, you get a lot more!
