I talked to the kids tonight about cell phones
Added 2019-10-01 02:31:10 +0000 UTCI explained how things get weird. Interestingly, towards the end of this discussion we talk about our family policies about the kids having cell phones. I ended up spending family time around the table tonight explaining to the kids how it's possible to ruin your entire career in a few minutes with a cell phone. It's fascinating that my children have that option.... if I were to give them a phone.
Anyways, I found this discussion to be fascinating. I hadn't truly understood how much phones had changed throughout the years until we had this little chat. I hope you enjoy it.

Those two specials are sticking with me. I hope they bring about a healthy degree of correction without swinging the pendulum out of control the other way again.
2019-10-21 01:02:50 +0000 UTCI loved the Bill Burr/Dave Chappelle mention by Matt. Doesnโt surprise me but I like knowing Matt enjoys them too

2019-10-10 09:27:49 +0000 UTCRegarding the "Gramma Whitman" and home movies bit, I highly recommend the podcast, Ephemeral. It's about all those fleeting things, that hold hold an imprint of someone's life, that disappear forever and are forgotten. If you like feeling reflective and melancholy and thinking about what is lost.
2019-10-08 00:14:41 +0000 UTCI absolutely loved Matt's rant about talking to his younger self, It's clearly something he has thought about a lot and has strong feelings about. I don't have kids myself, but I felt I could agree with everything he said. Sure, you can argue that Yes, we as adults made mistakes as kids and we turned out OK after all, but we don't have to live with those mistakes sitting around online, waiting to be found as public opinion changes. Today's call-out culture society scares me.
2019-10-07 17:10:19 +0000 UTCEvery time I hook my phone up to a rental car (cabled or bluetooth) it for some reason plays the first song it finds in iTunes - sorted by track name, alphabetically. I mean, I must have put it there because I liked it at some point, but I'm getting sick of hearing Aan de kust by Blรธf. I moved from The Netherlands in 2007.
2019-10-07 17:00:49 +0000 UTCI'm curious to know what your thoughts are on other devices in the world that can ruin a life with one mistake. Cars and firearms come to mind. Assuming that you're comfortable with your children using these, with proper guidance and respect for their consequences, is there a reason that you would treat cellphones and/or social media differently? Have you considered that you're more uncomfortable with social media because you didn't have to learn about growing up, unlike cars and firearms? Not trying to backseat parent, legitimately curious. Enjoyed the episode.

2019-10-04 02:30:40 +0000 UTCThis was a great episode! We listened to the episode around the dinner table! My parenting style is also very conservative and it was good for my children to hear that it's not just mom 'n' dad who think like this! Thanks for your help!

2019-10-03 13:25:59 +0000 UTCMy dad has his own business and the home phone was also the business phone so we would answer with the business name.
2019-10-02 23:24:38 +0000 UTCI'm with you guys on the bluetooth thing. Every time I turned my car on it would play a random song from my phone over the speakers. If I was streaming a podcast, it would actually pause that to put my music on so that I would have to go in, turn off my music, go back to the podcast and hit play again. I eventually disabled that feature and just started driving with my headphones plugged in to save myself the time and patience.
