But.... there is something special about the water used in a baptism. It was created by God. I see the bible as telling a story of how God created us in order to have a relationship But we turned from Him to fulfill our own wants and desires. Taking what He gives us to give HIm glory and using it to glorify ourselves. This VR baptism seems, to me anyway, like we're taking something of God's, and trying to make it work for ourselves. It also kinda seems to defeat the purpose of baptism. To me, a protestant, baptism is a public declaration. But there's nothing public about VR. I can be anyone getting baptised. Who got baptised? Was it me, or a rendering of scooby doo? There's really nothing that ties it to me. So how well is it in declairgin my faithfulness to God. WIth all that being said, it sounds like it's perfect for me. I hate being in the center of a crowd. I hate people touching me, and I'm not a big fan of getting wet. But then again, maybe the discomfort is what makes it a meaningful event.

2019-07-03 03:42:37 +0000 UTCYears ago I administrated an online forum for Christian discussion with atheist and homosexuals. Worked well for a long time, and then some of the Christians that were not part of a church in their area, started to tear the group apart, until it wasn't good for anyone. Hebrews 10:19-25 is not something to be taken lightly. We must meet together physically to "spur one another on toward love and good deeds"
2019-06-21 20:17:11 +0000 UTCCross-section poll of The Third Chair for interesting-ness sake (I'll go first): Christan, Father of 5-1/2, Professional Engineer, hobby farm owner (goats, alpacas, pigs, pony, dog), Canadian, European descent, love to cook/bake (especially cheesecakes) among other things, will drive my used commuter car until it dies and I have a buy a new used one. Your turn.
2019-06-17 19:21:26 +0000 UTCThis was a great conversation and I completely agree with the potential value of VR church, but also the inherent limitations. That said, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the irony of having a conversation about the importance of geographical proximity and physical touch (even a handshake) - but having that conversation over the Internet between Alabama and Wyoming. (Not a criticism, just thought it was funny)
2019-06-16 16:05:15 +0000 UTCThis episode made my heart feel heavy.
2019-06-16 06:29:48 +0000 UTCAlso, I agree that you should get the VR pastor guy on. This would be an interesting conversation to have with the person who helps execute the action you're discussing and what it means to him and why he believes it is the right thing to do.
