I am looking forward to you having a drink out of your own personal desk in your own personal place once everything sorts itself out. I picture you and your wife having a glass of champagne instead of lemonade (well, I am french and my husband is from the Champagne région, so I feel obligated to say that 🥂). In a way I wonder if it is not better to wait for the end of the war which hopefully for soldiers and populations on either side, is sooner rather than later - and for the lift of sanctions ? But I am not in your shoes and honestly have no idea. I wouldn't advise anything that would be playing around the rules, because for some reason I think risking having problems with the current russian gouvernement isn't worth the game. While I personally believe putin won't agree to a deal this year and we should not lift sanctions anytime soon for obvious reasons, the truth is trump seems to really want to end the war quickly (even if its on awful terms for Ukraine) and lift sanctions ASAP so if these current peace talks get a breakthrough, you may get your opening to sell the apartment later this year because trump will probably lift the sanctions quickly once a ceasfire happens. Alternatively you could try to make a bank account in a country like Kazakhstan or another friendly country and launder the money into that currency then back into USD

She languishes in a retirenent hospital (of sorts) with alheizemers and stays un bed most of the time. We love my mum but she's not going to get better. It is what it is and we will support her in getting treated and housed as long as shes alive meanwhile I have to live with the guilt of wanting to put that inheritance 'to good use'.

A dumb idea maybe, can't you get a citizenship in another EU country or ME, a temp visa and see if you can set up a bank account and get the money that way. There's got to be ways around it.

2025-05-18 20:05:30 +0000 UTCThis apartment is an albatross. It's not the gift your wife's aunt thought it would be, since she can't repatriate any cash proceeds. It's more valuable as an apartment. I've seen things like this trip people up for YEARS. From the voice of experience, don't let yourself become ensnared. By the time the taxes and fees are netted out, plus all the greased palms and various vig collectors have their say, to say nothing of attorneys on both sides of the iron curtain, you might end up digging into your own pockets just to get out from underneath the place. In my highly unscientific opinion, your creative energies are better spent on writing comedy, collaborating with interesting peers / comedians, growing your channels, pursuing your creative endeavors. You have 100 percent ownership and control of that stuff!
