The original Karno's Heresies!

Once again, I was scrambling for Saturday Filler, when I found this 2-pager from 2002. Twenty-three years ago? Yikes.

Anyway, it never got run because it was soon replaced by a much better filled-out 12-pager, where I discuss the above points with a talking bookstore dog. But that means you probably haven't seen this proto-Heresy before. So enjoy this peek into the past, where a naive young Karno dips a toe into heresy. The poor fool - he had no idea how bad things could get.

We've had our heads down an unflushed toilet for so long that a depressingly significant share of us think that *is* the smell of freedom.

While I agree with the sentiment 100%, I do want to point out a logical fallacy in the tenth panel. Breast cancer *diagnosis* have increased since 1900, but that does not imply breast cancer has increased. Back then women didn't do regular self-inspections, and even if a lump was found, it was likely ignored. By the time it has metastasized and was causing observable issues, it was just "cancer" (actually more likely "consumption") It's the same with diagnosis of autism and other "on the spectrum" disorders, and issues like ADHD. Back in the 1900's such children would have simply been "spoiled" or "morons". The fact that diagnosis rates are up is more due to the diseases being understood. This is the "mistake" that RFK Jr's brain worm keeps making (deliberately IMHO, hence the scare quotes) to "justify" banning vaccines and NSAIDs, and to support various forms of quackery. That's why I feel we need to be careful of that logical trap.

Correct. We libertarians are sort of the exact opposite stupid of the communists who think if the government could do anything there'd be paradise. We know better than that, and I also know better than if people could do anything there'd be paradise, but I still want it to lean towards people can do anything.

Most hard-core capital-L Libertarians think that if there were no laws, they would be among the winners. In reality, the winners in a lawless world would be about 1 in a million (so 8000 of the 8 billion people on Earth), and everyone else would lose.
