I think you can only be ready for a terminal disease such as ALS in terms of accepting the fate but the actual progression of the illness, as it happens, must be terrifying. The acting in that scene was excellent. I came back from a holiday in Thailand several years ago and I woke up a couple of days later and I could barely move my body, and I live by myself. That was scary.
