To me, that insinuates that the big monster is in fact so adept at combat/destruction and has been dominating all challengers for so long that it has gotten utterly bored, and so in an attempt to spice things up/get a little challenge, it tries doing something that is completely out of character (playing nice), and does not play to its strengths, to see if it can dominate in that way as well. If yes, great, if not, it's always got brute force to fall back on.
