Popeye started out like that. The Thimble Theater company, with Olive, Whimpy etc, went down to the dock to rent a boat, and needed an able crewman....

Science fiction writers in particular like to use established worlds -- Larry Niven certainly did. A number of the stories I've posted on <b>Fur Affinity</b> take place in the same bailiwick -- a world populated by anthropomorphic folks, adjacent to our own.
