And PLEASE don't bring up religion. The Catholics were the most prolific torturers and killers on the planet until the Commies took the mass-murder title from 'em in the 1930's. It is entirely possible to be compassionate without organized religion - in fact, it's easier to be nice without a priest-type raving at you to kill the unbelievers.
