The "credit" is worth considerably more than the present-day US dollar. A million credits would solve pretty much all of Roy's money problems, with plenty left over.

I'd say that the extensive use of 'credits' as a generic future currency (most likely a shorthand for 'galactic/empire/federation/government/corporate credit, depending on who's in charge of the money) and the long-standing use of 'credits' in coin-op games has gotten people used to the concept by now. And if hard currency has become obsolete (which may happen, given the proliferation of electronic Point Of Sale transfers) then there may be no difference between 'credits' (the monetary unit) and 'credit' (the available funds one has to draw upon).

The sci-fi use of "credit" to mean currency would cause a lot of financial confusion. Even if money is really just a measure of infinitely transferable debt.
