I'm surprised by how dismissive Jay is of 'The Howling' (just Jay - not surprised at all by Rich the non-horror guy). "Not being as good as 'An American Werewolf in London'" as your main critique is lousy because that applies to most movies, because most aren't as good as that movie - but that doesn't make them bad!
'The Howling' is still one of the best werewolf movies ever, despite its flaws. And to get all the werewolf lore, need both 'An American Werewolf in London' AND 'The Howling'...
Lore that the movies share:
- Become a werewolf by being bitten by a werewolf
Lore in An American Werewolf in London:
- werewolves are four-legged, like a wolf
- An afflicted person involuntarily turns into a werewolf whenever there's a full moon
- a werewolf can be killed by regular bullets
- a werewolf's victims become ghosts that haunt him (or her) until the werewolf's own death
The Howling lore:
- werewolves are bipedal and stand upright like a human
- werewolves are actually shape-shifters who can change to human or werewolf at will, no full moon required
- only silver bullets or fire can kill a werewolf
- a werewolf's victims are just dead, no ghost hauntings at all
So both movies are necessary to cover all this lore. Both the best quadruped and the best biped werewolf movies together.

I was so relieved that matinee didn’t end up in the bottom cohort. I love that movie
