Restoring a Trashed Star Trek Control Panel

Restoring a Trashed Star Trek Control Panel

Comments

Have you seen the Okudas’ on with Adam Savage? They discussed the lighting of panels

erin hawco

some plastic fresnel lens material between the LED strips and the panels probably would have helped a lot with the diffusion

plop

Anything you make related to star trek I end up watching multiple times. We're watching DS9 again now. We'll look out for glass screen thing. It looks good 👍

Space Pug Pirate

That looks pretty great. I wonder if heat will be an issue. That might cause some problems with the LEDs overheating. Maybe add a tiny fan or vent holes.

Mark Brakenhoff

At 8:09, I enjoyed watching at 0.25x speed

Alex

I think Mike has little tea parties with them when no one else is in the studio.

Amanda Thompson

If you ever do that larger housing, feel free to ping me and I can share a 3D model that matches the curve of the panel, if that's useful to you. Also Mike stop pretending to be Jay, he suffers enough having to hear you talk about Star Trek endlessly. ;)

Tadeo D'Oria

Loved this video. Informative and entertaining, chef’s kiss. Did you send a link to Mr. Okuda so he could see how it came out?

Tim Kocher

This is the kind of project I would take on, and then my wife would be irritated that it's taking up space in the garage for the next year, because I would be working on it once a month.

Adam Atom Ant

Excellent. Now melt all the Baby Binks in a tank of acetone.

James Fraser-Shelley

Well done chaps, well done.

AndrewCoppard

As a huge DS9 fan, I love this so much!

Laura Elizabeth

Lots of great info here thanks! I did notice the switch from the yellow/blue/orange scheme to include more colors like purple. I do wonder if that helm explosion in One Little Ship caused the change out of the plexiglass.... also lots of complaints that the panel is curved to simulate the helm station. We really just wanted to light it up and hang it on the wall. It turned out to be more of a challenge due to the odd shape and need for lots of light. Eventually a larger housing might be needed and it would become more of an object rather than a wall piece. Either way, it was magic to light up such a historic prop. Thanks to all for watching me indulge in my personal nerdy passion. - Jay

So now that Mike spent a lot of time rewatching DS9 for research when are we getting a series or "best of" Re:View?

StormTemplar

It's an update, within an update, within an update. It's guest directed from the guy that made Ryan's Babe.

Joshua Cubbin

Firstly, you're god damn right. Second, It's pretty funny that they've recreated Discovery of all things and never any of the Trek that they actually like. Especially with a growing list of props from next gen.

Joshua Cubbin

Look, the man is doing pretty well for someone filling his lungs with spray paint.

Amanda Thompson

Mike is trying to spin the wheel and see what sends him to the ER first.

Amanda Thompson

My husband is so damn tired of hearing me talk about Star Trek. And our other Trekkie friends get uncomfortable with my space racism against the Trill. I wish Rich and Mike would talk about Star Trek with me and let me touch all their props.

Amanda Thompson

In all seriousness, you guys are doing great. It's better for these props to be in the hands of people who are passionate about them. The people complaining aren't trying to help or even critique, they're only trying to make themselves seem knowledgeable. Now you guys just need to recreate entire episodes of TNG and see how long Jay will last before going totally insane.

Amanda Thompson

I'm lost... why isn't this project in game show format?!

Kraamh

I feel their pain. I got this. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1830876393/star-trek-uss-enterprise-1701-d-modern? They had an option for a plexiglass backing so you could backlight it. But I noped out as I knew getting even lighting would be a pain in the ass. Maybe I should have bought it and hired Miek Okuda to mount it for me. :D

Kellic

Wow, that looks great!

Robyn Nelson

Pay attention, Jay. There will be questions about this on the next Star Trek Trivia. Also, did the UPDATE segment have its own UPDATE?

andrew

If only you could have called Mendon and smart Barclay for help!

Yngwie Tarantino

Rip Jay. Maybe in another episode youll get your David Lynch tribute.

Joshua Mannix

Reminds me of the old days when Dad and I would work on our deck... badly. Good times... good times.

Erik Sheedlo

Can you solder using friction and a router? If so then yes.

Joshua Cubbin

Someone needs to do a welfare check on Mike. Because Jay tried to change the subject by taking about Severance - specifically during a discussion about the helm control of the Defiant - and Mike didn't immediately go on a tangent about how Adam Scott from Severance also played the helmsman of the Defiant in First Contact.

Joshua Cubbin

If we give RLM enough money, eventually all tv shows’ sets will be destroyed. A noble pursuit.

Count Sqwueekula

Get him the log lady’s log!

BENJAMIN SHULTZ

Cover part of it with black construction paper for authenticity.

The Real Zam

Just realized that Mr. Fire safety should not be handling a device that melts metal at 400c. How about Jay? Does he have steady hands? With his pervy taste in movies I am sure they get plenty of exercise. No way Mike does. He probably shakes like Katherine Hepburn from all the booze.

The Real Zam

Those Okudagrams are works of art. If you guys get any others, I can program some easily programmable (WLED) individually addressable LEDs that will let you mimic the blinking / color changing effects you mentioned above. Does Rich Evans know how to solder?

The Real Zam

Cricut stencils can be a bitch for bleed like that, i feel for you Rich lol...i've learned that if you do a first coat(s) of paint using the surface colour first it will fill in any gaps without being noticable. Then you can paint over it with your choice colour and there's a lot less bleed.

Kate Gottli

if I knew this was there and nobody else was bidding on it you would've had a fight :-) I missed Baltar's command chair, the real Baltar from 1978 for $800 and no competing bids when I thought I was gonna go for closer to 5 to 8000. There were probably five people in the world that wanted it and I was one of them

Jeff Kleist

I really love this!

PIG

I had tremendous anxiety when this thumbnail popped up. You all did a fabulous job🖖

Damon Killian

Yoooo I didn't know it would be the fucking helm control you bastards. Sigh. I live vicariously through you so I don't have to address my crippling depression

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

RLM should have a series called re:Trek to group all their Star Trek videos under.

DonMac

Thanks for this video, it was a pleasure to watch! The final result is beautiful.

PunKat

I just want my kids back

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Amazing info from a person with a profile picture from my favorite book. I have CatWorf on a t-shirt.

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

It's looks amazing despite Mike's obvious spray paint addiction. Love the Party Down/Severance theory. Talk more about Severance!

Amanda B.

It's great to see this restored to its former glory! I did a digital reproduction of it for work on The Roddenberry Archive alongside Mike Okuda, and we had to compensate the colors for the different light sources so the gels looked correctly, it was a fun research rabbit hole to go down, trying to track down what specific light bulbs they used. According to Mike the colored gels were very difficult to work with, and pieces of the gels often had to be replaced episode-by-episode to make sure they looked their best, leading to some buttons changing colors between episodes. The new helm console panel was actually first seen in 'Waltz', tho as they were released out of order from filming, it is indeed likely they decided to replace it after 'One Little Ship'. By late DS9 dot-matrix printing tech started to be of enough quality and low cost as to be a useful alternative to the gels, so whenever a panel needed maintenance they just replaced it with new printed versions. These not only needed no maintenance, they also allowed for many more colors and gradients to be used. If you pay attention around the Defiant, you'll notice that many of the panels were replaced around seasons 5-7 precisely because of this reason, and Doug Drexler did new designs for them each time to make use of the new colors/gradients (like the little Defiant schematics you mentioned added to the helm). This is also the reason why the colors changed so drastically, printed panels technically had the same orange+purple colors as the gels, but they weren't translucent so they didn't change so much with different light sources.

Tadeo D'Oria

Some of my favorite content from you guys are these prop videos, I don't know why just neat to watch you enjoy your hobbies. Also can you buy Jay something from Twin Peaks FFS.

JTruts

You guys should open the Mike Stoklasa Haunted Prop Museum to compete with Zak Bagans

Brian

I’m upgrading my 3D printer so I’d be willing to donate my currently working 3D printer to you guys to see how bad you can fuck it up.

Bill Lehecka

I had a panel from first episode of DS9. My friend was a grip on TNG and then DS9. I sold it on Ebay for $500. Someone has it.

L. J.

Oh wow. I’d love to have something like this. I’d never leave the house. I’d just invite people over to play Star Trek.

THE_GnomeChomskee

Over the shoulder look edit was fucking brilliant.

Frazzled Doo

This is my favorite RLM vid in awhile. So absurd yet charming and funny
