We Watched Too Many Puppet Master Movies - re:View (part 2)

Comments

DVD got lost in the post (if it was ever legitimate). The hunt renews.

Preston Petersen

It took me this long to make the mental connection that Charles Band is associated with Laserblast, though I’ve heard Tom Servo’s line “Ah, the Charlie Daniels Band is now the Charles Band” many, many times.

andrew

Skippy looks like Anthony Michael Hall in “Weird Science”

andrew

Shout out to Felton Perry, as soon as I saw him I was like "I know that man...Robocop!"

Scottie Wottie

I'm surprised Jay didn't mention the 1994 movie 'The Puppetmasters' starring the late Donald Sutherland. It's based on a '50s novel of the same name by Robert Heinlein and is more like 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' plotwise, so no killer dolls, but the similar title must have created some confusion. And I'm sure some people browsing in video rental stores at the time thought these were related movies.

DonMac

It's the Not At All Great Pumpkin (Beer) Charlie Brown!

Jeremy _

Forget it Jeremy- it’s Pumpkin Town.

Preston Petersen

YES! That’s part of what made the metaphor fall apart from my perspective. I relate with Jack when he talks about his “super power” of being able to make sense of even the thinnest nonsense, and this movie had me working overtime. I feel like with this kind of movie, if you lose the metaphor the whole thing is toast. I’m happy to hear I’m at least not some lone nut who just did not enjoy it at all. Edit: And I haven’t seen the Cabinet of Curiosities so I have no idea but if it good I’ll check it out.

Preston Petersen

Am I the only one who thinks The Substance is just sort of a remake of the Netflix "Cabinet of Curiosities" episode "The Outside"?

Jeremy _

Eh, as they say they'd have to get into the Puppet Master "apocrypha" to cover the remaining films and don't seem inclined to do that.

Jeremy _

Yes, exactly. Compared to at least the early Harryhausen stuff, the clips of The Primevals they show look positively buttery smooth. It mean any stop-motion like that looks hokey to us, but it's important to remember that we have now run the experiment for 30+ years of using CGI animation instead and other than a few real gems like Tron, Abyss and Jurassic Park, it ALSO looks bad and hokey just in a different way. So it comes down to which form of crap you want. Meanwhile normal, * actual * animation looks just fine and romps and rules the world (i.e. Miyazaki stuff, non-remake Disney stuff, Pixar's "Inside Out 2" being the earningest thing they've made in years, etc)

Jeremy _

You may be right. As I recall saying, every year breweries have the same two bad ideas in quick succession: "Let's make a pumpkin beer!" (they add cloves and cinnamon to beer and it's terrible) and then "Let's make a Christmas beer!" (they add cloves and orange zest to beer and it is also terrible). You seem correct that nothing can stop this endless cycle.

Jeremy _

I like how this episode ends on the positive note that Charles Band didn't just let The Primevals be slapped together from existing material but let the stop motion sequences be completed. And the stop motion looks pretty good. In a different timeline, where I was more often in a mood to watch a movie, I'd already ordered a copy of The Primevals, if there is a DVD or Bluray release of the movie. I enjoyed the re:View on The Puppet Master series!

Marvin Falz

Also, I was never sure if Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley were supposed to be the same mind in two different bodies or two entirely different entities... you can read the movie both ways and most of what happens doesn't make sense in either...

Manuel Johnen

Most disappointing movie of the year. I absolutely adored "Revenge", but "The Substance" is an off putting farce that goes on for too long and degenerates into stupid splatter trash in the last 20 minutes.

Manuel Johnen

FYI: I found a copy of Eddie Presley (1992) in the UK. I live in the US so it will probably not arrive until mid-November, but shortly after it does I’ll upload a copy to Internet Archive or a Google Drive or both since it is so hard to find presently. I figured I’d let my fellow RLM Patreon weirdos know now rather than once it arrives since I imagine no one who may be interested in watching it would see this information several weeks later. If anyone is interested though check back here in mid November for more info or links.

Preston Petersen

Part 3 when?

uknown1100

These re:Views were great! The day my mom caught me watching these movies was the day she got me started on my first communion.

DimmieDim

*Possible Spoilers if anyone is worried about that* What did you think? I went in with high hopes (I mostly liked Revenge so I wanted to check this out) and it really did not work for me. I feel like the metaphor got lost halfway through and the insane runtime really got to me. I loved the ending but by the time it got there it wasn’t enough to win me back. The repetitive and redundant middle of the movie made me start questioning dumb stuff like what fictional world this is taking place in where network TV fitness programs or New Year’s Eve variety shows are ratings powerhouses, or where aging stars are Journeyman carpenters and craftsman, or how someone gets paid without providing verification of identity, or where the opinion of the broadly dorky neighbor is valued by a star (aging or otherwise) and other dumb stuff like that. I get it is deliberately an exaggerated, fantasy portrayal of the world meant to be largely symbolic and metaphorical and and hyper-stylized and deliberately unsubtle rather than a realistic depiction of our world- but what I felt was a very long mid movie slump and narrative listlessness muddled the metaphors (by being too one sided and not depicting more how the older selves negatively impact the younger selves out side of being messy and unproductive and less fun) left me questioning those decisions and asking pointless things like why they didn’t make her a legally distinct “Tik Tok” star or something that felt closer to our world. It is a shame because I thought the performances were good, it was visually striking, the original music and needle drops felt appropriate worked, and I really think there is a good movie in there with some skillful editing (even just using released footage- like it think I could really like a fan edit). I’m a patient guy and can enjoy a 3 hour movie but for me the material did not justify this film’s running time . It honestly felt 40 to 50 minutes too long for me. The reviews have been mostly glowing though, so I’m apparently in the minority which I find surprising (judging also my the response of the other theater goers). I’m curious to hear your take (even if RLM ends up reviewing it) since I don’t know anyone else who has seen it. But obviously you don’t have to if you don’t want to.

Preston Petersen

You can’t fight big-pumpkin man. Those sons of bitches hold all the strings.

Preston Petersen

Cut to Jesus and Santa looking sad together in a corner as they realize the bar for a Christmas miracle has fallen this far.

Preston Petersen

The former Mrs. Spock Jr. was in a Puppet Master? Or did they mention Hellraiser 3 or Red Dwarf or something? These are questions that can easily be answered by just watching the video, but these are also are the hard hitting questions that need to be asked damnit.

Preston Petersen

His head just does that

Rhea

Unrelated: please review The Substance.

Christopher Keating

Seriously dude, pumpkin beer? Didn't we discuss this a year ago this time and agree that those things are horrible?

Jeremy _

I had no idea this was the backstory for The Primevals! This honestly makes this whole review series worth it.

neuracnu

Jack repping one of my favorite illustrators, Kyle Beaudette, with that shirt is everything

Sara

Way too enjoyable in regard to the quality of the films discussed. Primevals re:View when ?

Bill Wilson

Will we be getting a Part 3 covering the latest movies?

Mahaloth

I would love to see 2010 James Gun make a Decapitron movie

Zoran Basic

Egg salad is here!

Jimmy Rode

Who knew Jadzia Dax had another career?

Paul Randall

At least DeCoteau doesn't hide the fact, that "Curse of the Puppet Master" is a remake of "Sssssss"... at 26:57, you can see a weird snake human hybrid prop on the right side of the screen...

Manuel Johnen

I hope this is a childrens' suicide video.

Scott Richardson

Sutek's nipples look so threatening

Zoran Basic

This Thanksgiving I am thankful for you guys. P.S. It's Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada.

John Kott

Part 1 covered the "good" ones, so this must cover the "other" ones.

DonMac

Literally just sat down to watch an old Halloween BOTW or something while I eat my breakfast to find new Puppet Master video posted six minutes ago, IT'S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE

Sara Iyer

I love the fact that you made Jack look like different puppets just with head-size changes on both of these.

Mojo

It's OK you guys, I'm here with you. We can get through this together.

AshesBoomstick
