Little Shop of Horrors - re:View

Little Shop of Horrors - re:View

ha.. :D

Beginning of Days

When I first saw the thumbnail, I thought they did the first 3 person re:View with Jay, Colin, & Rich Evans.

The Real Zam

I saw this movie in the theatre when released and a number of times on TV, and it was always the theatrical release. The original ending (aka "Director's Cut" ending) was just a rumoured thing not shown until a deleted scene of it was a bonus on its first DVD release. But that was quickly withdrawn from the market due to (I think) some rights issue and became a collector item, so I still never saw it. Then after more than 25 years, the movie was released on disc with the original ending and I finally saw it and was... disappointed. Very disappointed. Maybe my expectations were too high, but the director's cut ending did not work for me as well as the theatrical ending. So the next time I get a chance to watch it, it'll just be the director's cut to see if I'll finally like that ending better.

You guys should definitely do a Bowfinger Re:View. It's one of my favorite comedies that I feel went under the radar for a bunch of people.

Loved this movie forever! I’ve always felt that Audrey II’s mouth and movement were based on Lynne Thigpen’s performance as the radio DJ in The Warriors. The camera is only ever focused on her mouth in the movie and there seems to be some resemblance at least. I dunno I might be nuts, but it’s not out of the question they used those scenes as inspiration/ reference.

Eric Anderson

I have never seen any version of this movie/play but I remember Audrey II scared the absolute *daylights* out of me as a kid. Definitely wanna watch all the versions now. Thanks for this!

Jessie Zimmer

I'm not crazy about this movie, and I vastly prefer the original, but this is one of the few musicals that doesn't instantly make me want to vomit... so, take that as an endorsement, I guess...

Manuel Johnen

I absolutely love this movie. So glad you revisited it, and I find it hilarious that the reason Colin finally watched it was a SLOT MACHINE

Ben-K

Aboot’ ta experience a well needed&deserved RLM product. I’m glad you’re there..cuz I’m here. Watched *Space Cop* again last night..dunno why. 😎

Frazzled Doo

the articulation in the mouths of Jay and Colin are both exceptional in this video. props to the puppeteers, true masters!

Jason Paul

@Jay, how about a Director showcase dedicated to Frank Henenlotter? I'm sure you're a fan, and he is an interesting figure in the genre...

Alessio Roic

Frank Oz's direction is absolutely brilliant in this movie. I can't imagine it being done by anyone else!

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Just saw this in my email. I don't think I've been this excited for a Re:View since Robocop (which was really a HitB, but it was before you started Re:View).

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

My High School did a production of Little Shop of Horrors. They actually stuck with the original feel bad ending.

I listened to the vinyl of the soundtrack when the movie was released, never watched it for some reason, but when this re:View was announced I found out it was directed by Frank Oz, and ordered the blu-ray with both cuts. Fantastic movie, there is so much to love about it, especially the cinematography and the puppetry. This is almost a "Fire Walk With Me" moment, except there's no Little Shop of Horrors TV series. Thanks for reviewing this movie!

Jay picked up on something that’s always bothered me about the Director’s Cut ending: its “self-indulgence.” It is far too long. In the stage version, “Don’t Feed the Plants” runs for three minutes, and at that length, the song is a great way to end the show. In the movie, it goes on for twice as long and just kills the pacing (which is especially bizarre given how much action is happening on screen). Howard Ashman (who directed the stage version in addition to writing the lyrics) and Frank Oz paced the rest of the material so superbly that putting the “correct” ending in the movie depresses the whole thing when it should be sending you out flying. As much as I love “Don’t Feed the Plants” in the stage musical, and think that it could have worked under other circumstances in the movie, changing the ending for the film was the right call.

Matthew Murray

I remember there being someone making a choice to have it removed from the shelves. That was 20+ years ago, so my memory is hazy on it. I do recall being just as disappointed not getting this DVD as I was after not finding a copy of the "This is Spinal Tap" DVD with commentary by Spinal Tap... a buddy borrowed it before I listened to the commentary, and I never got it back. That, too, was discontinued. lol

AshesBoomstick

Super excited that you guys actually reviewed this! It's so well done!

Kersten Peterson

I remember hunting for this too, it was 80$ on this new website called eBay. IIRC David Geffen personally intervened to remove that DVD with the alternate ending from store shelves. Although it's impressive, I still prefer the theatrical version.

Damon Killian

hellll yeah!

Tom McGraw

Okay, so in this and the last HitB, there’s been a strange cutaway, to Jay while Colin’s talking, and to Mike while Jay is talking, where it seems like the only reason to do so was to show the continuity of the beer that they’re drinking. Maybe. Is Jay even drinking in this one? I went through and tried to find the time stamp and then gave up, but didn’t even see a shot where Jay is drinking so maybe I’m hallucinating. But these shots exist and they feel out of place! (I do know you want to break up one person talking, so don’t tell me it’s just for that. In both videos, the shot they cut to is Mike/Jay wiggling around awkwardly, is that the point? Also, the answer is 7. Seven people read the video descriptions.)

Just a little addition about the Director's Cut: The DVD release of the alternate cut was released on DVD back in 1999 (within a year), and I spent a couple weeks going from store to store looking for a copy of it, because it was discontinued within a few months of release. I never found a copy. I was delighted to finally get that version on the blu-ray release. Over a decade later.

AshesBoomstick

One of my absolute favorites. Yay!!

Wendy Cheatham

Excellent choice! I know this movie by heart, have shared it with at least 20 people I've known over the years... What an astounding use of special effects. Seamless for the most part. The use of real-life puppets with slowed down video as a means to speed it up and make the musical numbers seamless is beyond spectacular. I still consider this one of the greatest special effects/puppet work accomplishments in the history of film. The music is awesome. One of Martin's greatest performances, and I am totally in love with this movie. Now, I wonder what y'all have to say about it! :D

AshesBoomstick

So excited 😆

Karin M

just watched both movie versions, and saw the musical last night perfect timing.
