Near Dark - re:View

Near Dark - re:View

Comments

Jay you spoilerer! I just happened to have recently started a certain series and with each episode I'm thinking, ya know... this seems on trajectory for Jay's secret spoiler. Just hit it. Pretty awesome still though.

Yngwie Tarantino

Love this movie.

WW

I saw Near Dark in a college film studies class - the university had 35mm print. It was great! And I've been wanting to see it again for years. It's strange that it's just not available easily. My favorite weird connection is the actress is the same actress who played the "are all these your guitars?" girl in Pink Floyd: The Wall.

This is one of those movies that feels like a milder and less tidy version of things we get now, but was an absolute oddity when it was released. I hate saying things are ahead of their time. There's a lot of 80s in this. But the way it approaches story was not being done much then. The faith they put in the audience is remarkable. (Especially compared to something like LOST BOYS.) I love it and you'll pry my digital copy of it out of... well, it'll disappear when my hard drives die I guess. If you want to read something dark, Look up what Eric Red got into later on.

Lowell Bartholomee

After seeing this, I wish they'd do "After Hours" which is a cult movie that really is a cult movie despite being directed by Marty Scorsese

DonMac

I signed up for the 7 day free trial of Moviesphere via Amazon Prime to watch this movie. Then I cancelled it. I enjoyed the Re:View more than the movie, which was good, but as noted, pretty dark and gross. I was left wondering how Lance H's character managed to stay alive over 100 years, when they were all so bad at being vampires. Wish they'd given more props to Jeanette Goldstein, who is amazing in everything.

Top Hat Monkey

Written by Eric Red! Good grief. I only know about him from The Dollop episode about him but yikes

Tim Kocher

It's currently "on" Amazon Prime via MovieSphere ... whatever that is. Also, ya know, other ... means ... that may be against Patreon's TOS to talk about here.

Jessie Zimmer

I watched Near Dark for the first time the other day before watching the Re:View episode. Not that anyone is asking about my opinion on the movie, but... I rather enjoyed it. It reminded me of Saturday afternoons as a kid flipping through channels and coming upon TNT or some other channel that would play this. I wish I could find a hard copy for a decent price 😅

Lance Batty

Thanks for all your content lately, currently coping with my Mom having a stroke earlier this month, and every recent RLM has made me smile and laugh. Case in point, Rich's Mike Stoklasa moment. We've all been there, Rich.

Jessie Zimmer

“stunt man’s wig falls off” 😂😂😂 loved this movie, and you really nailed its ups and downs. My wife said it should be called Near Dawn because they are mainly dealing with that

Tim Kocher

Love this movie and this re:View was fantastic. What a batch of excellent shows by RLM this year - the guys are absolutely crushing it.

R_Pupkin

TIL I had this movie confused with Night Breed in my head for the last 20 something years. Hey, it was the 80s; all the vampire movies from high school start to blend together after a while.

Katy

This movie seems so familiar. I may have seen it years ago.

Mike St Louis

In fact, generally, it's odd the extent to which Rich and Jay are asking for "Ravenous".

Notation

Interestingly, Rich is sort of describing Ravenous and its ending. Another great 90s horror film, another female director, another vampire-ish narrative (technically wendigo but it works exactly the same way as vampires). Excellent film I'm surprised hasn't been re:Viewed.

Notation

👍🎅🏿👍

Kendel Fargo

The transfusion always bugged the hell outta me. But otherwise, great flick. Pleases to learn the same writer was The Hitcher writer. Loved that one too. Very creepy!

Amy L Jones

RIP Bill Paxton. One of the best.

rachel

Watching the movie, did anyone else notice that the plainclothes cop who talks to Caleb in the bus stop has a massive bandage wrapped around his hand. What was that about?

DonMac

I didn't know that "Near Dark" blu-ray was so hard to find now. But I then remembered that I bought the blu-ray on a BOGO sale around a decade ago, so I guess it was being dumped back then because it wasn't popular enough to sell at regular price.

DonMac

Watched it on edibles the other night in anticipation of this review. The bar scene would be uncomfortable normally, the edibles didn’t help.

Me too Shane 🤠

Kitsune

Midnight Mass - sorry for spoilers for those of you who haven't seen it. But hey if you haven't seen it by now, maybe the clickbait "It's got vampires" is what will get you to watch. It's really great!

Joseph DiSabito

What show is jay talking about?

Jennifer Olson

Of course Old Man Rich Evans would ask for a check via postal mail. Would probably store it in his old man cell phone wallet until he went to the bank to deposit it. 😉

Kerri Lewis

More like "slice of lowlifes"... The problem with this movie is that it has a very faulty script, probably because the unusual setting introduced some problems that made almost the same premise from The Lost Boys, a lot more difficult to develop.

Juan Calvo

What a weird coincidence, I was just talking about this movie with someone. I watched a movie recently that came out last year called My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To, and it’s sort of similar to Near Dark in that it’s a vampire slice of life, only way more depressing.

Why were 30 seconds of black left in at the end after the re:View credits? You have already conditioned us to expect an after-credits Star Trek reference.

Back online. Fun fact, the kid with the punchable face (Homer), he is a writer and producer for the TV show Queen of the South. Apparently, he transitioned from acting to writing after the 90s. His autobiography, the Mao Game, was made into a film and apparently discusses him dealing with a heroin addiction and sexual abuse. Would not be too surprising given the track record of child actors in the 80s and 90s.

James Van Sickle

Rich Evans is immortal, no ones ever gone.

David Dragoon

Anything change on the re-upload?

jas722

I really like that movie! very atmospheric.

Peter Varga

Not uncommon. Nintendo has a terrible reputation of going after anyone who does reviews or let's plays of their games, even the old ones no one can easily buy or play. Some companies just don't understand the legal concepts behind Fair Use or how a discussion about their 20+ year old film might be financially beneficial to them.

James Van Sickle

I feel like we should somehow be blaming Rich Evans for this...

Disinterested Handjob

Thank god. It's a Rich Evans re:view and I just couldn't live with myself if I didn't get to finish it

Brian

I would also like to know where I can find the Diamond cobra video...

Connor Martin

It'll be back up soon!

Red Letter Media

Did anyone grab it before it was taken down? Like the diamond cobra video?

Brian

Did the guys make it private or is it blocked? Because I came here to see it....

Timothy Liebe

Wellllll shit

VoDomino

copyright goblins got it

run_away

Same here

Juho Huuki

Did the video get a takedown? I paused it halfway to finish later and now it's gone.

Harry

With the Gremlins 2 Re:View, did Joe Dante have to intervene in order to get the video back up?

Zan Ferguson

Aaaaaand it’s private

Private Lee Speaking

Glad I waited til after lunch.... I see studio Canal has nothing better to do

Aaron Austin

Fuck! Studio Canal blocked it. Didn't even get to see it yet.

Colin

Anyone else not able to watch this?

From Oklahoma. Can attest to the fact that our nights are indeed short.😂

Shane Akers

Near Dark is also available for streaming on Amazon Prime via MovieSphere. (MovieSphere requires a $4.99 subscription after a 7-day trial)

Matthew Dolley

A good example of a movie that commits 100% to being a slice of life movie about bored vampires is the Jim Jarmusch film Only Lovers Left Alive. Although that’s more about the kind of vampire that’s been amassing a collection of cultural artifacts, reminiscing about meeting historical figures and that sort of thing. One thing that makes it unique is how they’re actually over killing as a means to acquire blood to drink.

Michael Parker

17:50, Answering Jay's question: The reason why you don't give up is that you get oblivion or worse. The whole idea of vampires is that you give up your soul for immortality. If you don't have that in the balance then you don't really have a vampire story. It's not a disease. It's a choice, which is why the classic movies require an invitation of some sort. And you have to decide to pollute your soul by killing others so that you may have eternal life. Until you screw up, and then it's the Pit. Also: Salem's Lot, the '70s TV miniseries, had a lot of influence in bringing vampires back into the modern era. There's an idea: a Re:View of Salem's Lot.

Michael Puttré

You guys - The Hitcher is available on HBOMAX. Watched it last week!

Yes. That's why you turn into a cow every time you eat a hamburger...

Manuel Johnen

If your sole source of nourishment as a vampire is human blood, why would a blood transfusion "cure" your vampirism? Wouldn't you turn back to a human every time you fed?

LB876

Of course Jay has the German Blu-ray... "The night has its price"...

Manuel Johnen

Yes! Can't wait to watch this one.

Actually, no, just put it back in the player and it looks like trash, a VT transfer! Oh well.

Mel

Great review, RLM. I was thinking about what Jay was saying about James Cameron. Jay is right on the money as usual. James Cameron is a prick, but with talent. I just think he's one of the few directors who always seems to deliver the goods. If it was anyone else directing these Avatar sequels, I'd say there was no chance of it being successful: It's been 12-13 years, the audience has moved on, the 3D trend has died down again, etc. But with James Cameron directing it's a maybe.

AllGoodNamesRGone

Love this film, it got shown on late night telly A LOT in the UK. Picked up the DVD 2 disc special edition on Anchor Bay from a charity shop pre-pandemic. Looks pretty nice.

Mel

We tried looking for it on Amazon Prime. It's there, but is through another streaming service, and in order to watch it, it wanted us to subscribe to it. No thanks (not even for their "free trial)."

Matthew Gladney

"The Lost Boys" isn't nearly as good as "Near Dark"... so of course it's more popular, because people are ssstupit. If "Near Dark" has one flaw, it's that vampirism in the end is rather easily cured... you wonder, why they didn't try it before... Also, why can nobody say or write Lance Henriksen's last name right...? It's always "Hendricksen" or "Henrickson" or something like that... :/

Manuel Johnen

Rich, if you're wanting additional interesting takes on vampires check out the novel Fevre Dream by George RR Martin. Portrays the vampires as a legitimate humanoid species rather than a supernatural entity.

Joshua Mannix

I absolutely love new vampires. Lonely murderhobos and just miserable creatures. And NO SPARKLES! They should burn or rot in sunlight, not sparkle like cheap rhinestones. Thank you for your work, I was happy to find new movie about my favorite kind of vampires By the way, I know some of you like sci-fi, so go find old soviet cartoon Vampires of Geona. It has Arnold Schwarzenegger and Silvester Stallone

A big gripe I had with the movie was how short the nights were. Either the vampires start their shenanigans at 4AM or time moves very fast in the Oklahoma area

Adam K.

Thank you for your work.

Benway23

Rich sure knows a lot about how to be a serial killer…

Goldy Loxx

yay! thanks for new video <3

Peter Varga

Thanks as always for the fun stuff, dudes

Conor

I watched it on Amazon Prime....
