Dustin Diamond interview
Added 2021-02-02 00:24:44 +0000 UTC
Way back on only our third episode of Half in the Bag, fellow Wisconsin-ite Dustin Diamond let us interview him. And with the news of his passing, we dug into that footage and realized there was a bit more to the interview than what ended up in the episode. We made some jokes about him over the years, but he was actually really nice to us. RIP.
RIP "Screech" :)

I wasn't raised with Saved by the Bell, but I can understand the loss of a comedian from a TV show from people's youth. RIP.

Whoa, did you realize at the time that was Robert Maillet at the first table where you're asking directions? (probably best recognized as Dredger, that gigantic main French hench from the 2009 Sherlock Holmes and was also was in 300, Pacific Rim, Deadpool 2, among others...)

Also not a peter cushing cgi in rvots. George wanted to use something like it but the use makeup/facial prosthetics. The idea of a cg Tarkin was not fully "realized" till Rogue One. Nice try Dustin!

Seems like a normal dude. Cancer at 44 is pretty bullshit. Thanks for sharing.

Mike actually trying to sell his brand is really funny b/c he's legitimately trying to impress them. He's on good behavior.

This was a sweet post to make. It sounds like Dustin had a rough go of things post-SbtB but he seemed like a decent dude who was just trying to figure shit out, and he looked like he was legitimately stoked to just talk with you guys here. RIP.

This breaks my heart. My husband of 27 years passed away from cancer three years ago (January 23, 2018). When he went in, he was in bad shape and only had two weeks to live but the Oncologists gave him a year and three days. I cherished every day with him. It destroyed me when he passed away but now, I have to look at that year as a gift because we gave each other so much love and tried to make every moment count. I'll never forget on his final days, how my husband shook the hands of the doctors and nurses who treated him. He thanked them for trying to save him and how he appreciated them. During his treatment, he was never angry, bitter or sad. His whole life he was always been calm about everything. I asked why he wasn't freaked out, he just shrugged and said that it wouldn't help his situation. God, I miss him. I was praying for Dustin Diamond. I actually quite liked him and I'm so glad you showed this footage. RIP Dustin.

He seems so relaxed and appears to have genuinely enjoyed your conversation. It's nice that you took the time to remind people there was more to him than what the tabloids printed.

Man, cancer at 44. Just terrible (aside: TotalBiscuit always comes to mind when I see someone so young die from cancer). Seems like he was a nice guy who had some troubles stemming from becoming a child star and not being able to build on that, which must have been crushing. It must be really difficult living your entire life under a microscope, having people's impression of you formed solely from the three or four bad things reported in the media and one scripted appearance on a show that people thought was real. And the man was willing to admit on camera to liking one of the prequels! Now that's an honest person. I don't know if he was a good, bad, or somewhere-in-the-middle person, but I'm sure he deserved better. Most people do.

Dustin was just a guy. He wasn't an industry "face" who always presented like he was on the Carpet or at an industry event. Thinking about the stuff I know about him (interviews, publicity stunts, scandals, etc.), I could see a few of my friends doing the same things if they had cash. Trying to be a good normal dude without going "saint" or "asshole". I hope the porn actors are better in Heaven, Bro. You deserved a bit better.

That’s a really nice thing to post; everyone gets so obsessed with tearing down these minor celebrities from our past, so it’s nice to see him just being a normal dude. I can’t imagine how much shit he had to go through growing up being “Screech”; people forget that he was a few years younger than the other SBTB cast members. RIP
