Behind the Scenes: Filming on VHS

Behind the Scenes: Filming on VHS

Oh shit, I too use the H6, but recently sprung for the F6; it does 32bit float recording and doesn't use a dumb mini-b connector which Zoom insisted on carrying over to their 2020 model. Since you know, that's smart. At least the H8 is micro-b. The F6 is USB C, though no ability to attach zoom accessories to it like 2 extra xlr ports, shotgun mics, etc. Though they do have a bluetooth module you can plug into it and control with your Apple ONLY devices (no android app yet). Also, the F6 supports Sony NP-F970 batteries along with 4-6 AAs, though the F970 blocks the sd card slot. Also, the phantom power bottoms at 24V and not 12V like on the H6. As a child I think we had the Sony VHS recorder. I think we got rid of it 2 years ago.

Alex Beyer

That was great.

This also makes me want to buy a VHS player and watch old tapes... just for the feel of them, the sound of the machine closing... I also want to listen to old music tapes with the boombox I got from an old boss that's lying around here somewhere..

CDB Paine

Very cool (very cool, yes very cool)

Hey- I'm just rolling through some of these but saw your question here. During the viewing, they'll often react to or comment on something specific in the movie, but it's not always obvious what they're reacting to unless you know what it is. For these, they'll usually show the scene or line from the film and then their reaction to it. By using the mirror, they know exactly what the reaction is to without having to watch a large chunk of the film or just guess at it.

Dan Port

Maybe I'm just a little slow, but why did they need a mirror to sync up the movie with their footage? I honestly don't get it.

Please Don't Make A Scene

Why can't I play this video? Edit: I have found out a browser plugin privacy bagder made vimeo think I didn't have access to the video for some reason :S

Anders

Love this stuff guys, keep up the great work!

Upped my pledge just for this, love the behind-the-scenes stuff. I've probably watched How Not To Make a Movie a dozen times.

Jordan

You guys are great! ;3

Loved it! would really appreciate seeing more stuff like this.

Soge

This is great, I definitely like seeing you guys just hanging out backstage

Kid_Devil

Great clip! Seeing how that episode was put together is great

Steven Wisniewski

That mirror trick though!!

Sarah Low

I love both the hilarious outtakes and the behind the scenes stuff you guys post here. I'd love to hear how bad the audio quality for the discussion/viewing from the VHS cameras was.

this makes me so happy, guys :) cunts

Always wondered how they synced their footage with the movie. They used mirror. Great idea and much easier than anything I would have thought of.

Videopocalypse

I love this look behind the scenes, I almost wish there was more of it! It's fascinating to see you guys adapt your workflow to these antiques.

Marneus

Very cool

Phill Pratt

I can't emphasise any more how much I appreciate the RLM guys putting the extra effort in to things like this - as a failed and frustrated content producer, I love these looks behind professional outfits making their content. If Jay or Mike see this, thank you for this and any more like it you make.

KJTB8

They used to give away bottles of beer and props in auctions. But a shitty contest would be better. The goal would be to write the scenario to an Adam Sandler-esque movie. Then Mike would give us $100 and would then tell us to fuck off. That would be great! :D

Vincent

Give us more BTS like this!

I suggest, just a suggestion, having a contest and giving away those tapes.

Rich Auntie Skeleton

The move to Vimeo tightens my trousers.

David S. Grop

I have no technical knowledge what so ever, so forgive me...how does the mirror trick work to sync up the audio?

Tom Newman

This was an awesome look at what went into making this BOTW. Keep it up guys

This was really interesting and cool! Thanks for showing us this. At some point I would also love to have a tour of your building and just more behind the scenes in general.

Ifrit9

I am a new Patreon member but I can already tell it’s well worth it. Your love for what you do really shines through behind the scenes videos like this!

this is really great stuff to see - as much as i love the snark and stuff, hearing you guys actually talk about filmmaking techniques etc is always really interesting

Alex Marshall

I was hoping you'd show us something like this. Thanks. It's super interesting to me, because I'm a dummy when it comes to this stuff that you guys are so good at. I smiled when Jay labeled the spine of the VHS tape too. So many memories of me fastidiously labeling every episode of television I recorded off of the tiny TV/VCR combo I had in my bedroom.

Steph K

The amount of work you guys put into your videos never ceases to amaze me. You are truly dedicated and talented filmmakers. A thousand thanks for all that you do.

Sondre

Nice.

Jeff Schneider

I LOVE THIS! I wasn’t sure if we would see a bts for it but this is great! Bts stuff is the best. Nice work guys

Katiy

I always wondered if it was a pain to sync the screening footage, but that mirror trick is pretty clever!

Agent Chodey Banks

I happily pay $15 a month to support you guys for all the content. Behind the scenes stuff like this is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Montague Films

This was really neat.

The episode would have been unwatchable.

Red Letter Media

i'm still not sure if i should be happy or disappointed that you did't use the authentic audio as well

This was wonderful.
