Star Trek Discovery (Pilot Episodes) - re:View

Star Trek Discovery (Pilot Episodes) - re:View

Have you guys ever considered doing Shin Godzilla on Half in the Bag? Would love to hear what you think about it after seeing your previous Godzilla review since its more focused on scientists/

Vlper

I'm really disliking the show, but i'd love to hear Rich and Mike's take on it week to week. There's a ton on trekky stuff in there that flies over my head.

James Roberts

NF and Matthew J - I read your comments here earlier so was excited to watch the 3rd episode, but now after seeing it I'm quite concerned about the show - I liked the first 2 mostly in the ways Mike addresses in their video, but I thought part 3 was kind of terrible in a lot of ways

Matt P

Ep 3 really has me hooked! I'm already happy with the character development happening.

Matthew Janda

ep 3 was FAR FAR better than the pilot. Rich was right, ep 3 should've been the pilot while we slowly learn Michael's backstory throughout the season.

NF

Yeah I like Enterprise, I think what really keeps it from greatness is there is something lacking in the core character dynamic, they never achieve the TOS/TNG/DS9 magic of the perfect combination of characters & actor chemistry. I did like the back to basic approach though, the really limited technology and the return to the wonders of exploration

Matt P

Post 9/11, the holy war bullshit is all we will ever get... I'm very disappointed by that kickoff. But, I'm really excited about this show because I feel like they put some effort into the quality of the production. The ornateness of the Klingons is pretty cool! Don't like how their voices sound like they are coming from the bathroom shower. ENT was a really great looking show, and I personally thought it was decent.

Matthew Janda

Slightly off topic but since they've reviewed this and other shows like Stranger Things. Does any one else think there would ever be potential to...at least hear Mikes opinion on other shows like Breaking Bad? Awgh I'd love to hear a discussion about that show between any one of these frauds

Audrey

Yeah I'm 100% in agreement with this - not sure why for decades now Trek has been afraid to move FORWARD. Enterprise, JJ films and now Discovery are all prequels. It seems like the best idea in the world is to, as Mike said, jump ahead 20 years - new crew, new production values, new modern dilemmas. Prime continuity but no handicap of having to make it fit in-between older shows - plus cameos from TNG/DS9/VOY are all possible that way. Why is a series about the future so stuck in its own past?

Matt P

To Mike's point about modern shows having the long form story telling as opposed to the episode of the week type adventures - I think there could be a happy medium, a lot of shows have mimicked the Buffy formula of monster of the week episodes, with a larger story building in the background over each season, most of the DC CW tv shows use that formula as does modern day Dr Who to pretty good effect - I think the Trek writers could maybe find some sort of similar approach

Matt P

Yeah, in many ways the new Battlestar Galactica felt more of the times with the immediate post 9/11 / Bush era and the current Trek at that time suddenly felt out of step with present day issues. Trek was also usually at the forefront of tackling social issues, but then got cold feet about being ahead of other shows with regards to LGBT content and other timely topics of conversations, when it should have been ahead of all the other sitcoms and network dramas

Matt P

The producers said after the first two episodes that it was, as you suggested, a prologue and that season starts with the third episode. I also agree with Rich about what you said about the universe of TNG being one you can see yourself living in. That was perfectly put and a large part of the appeal. The problem, though, with Berman/Braga era wasn’t necessarily burnout, it was the fact that the 18 - 49 audience’s tastes had evolved while Trek had not. You guys were right about each series copying the formula of TNG but again, it was more about not appealing to your changing audience than anything else.

Shawn O'Halloran

So not only does every movie need to be a trilogy now, but shows need to have multiple pilot episodes?

Ryan Lind

I know nothing about Star Trek but I could listen to Mike and Rich talk about it all night.

I completely agree about them needing to move to the future beyond the TNG/DS9/Voyager era. It is silly to now have 3 series in a row that take place at or before the TOS era, especially with modern special effects.

Kyle Williams

Mike I second a weekly STD panel!

meisterolsen

I used to be a fan of Star Trek back in the TNG days, but definitely feeling the burn out like they mentioned in the video. I saw the first half of the pilot, probably not going to watch the series unless it's on netflix and I'm bored. Sick of dark gritty wartorn reboots. Need hopeful future! SEND HOPE!

Ericson Wilkinson

The publicity materials said TOS.

Daniel Frank

Now I have a reason to watch these episodes so I can then watch this. And will Jay and Josh do a Twin Peaks ReView now please? It's so batshit.

Jason S

So is this supposed to be a prequel to the 60s TOS or a prequel to the Abrams films?

Lauren R

I thought the behind the scenes on std where interesting as Fuller exited to work on American gods. For instance they originally were going to have different color uniforms. Also he was planning a American horror story type seasons with each season being a different main story. I will continue watching but have slightly lower expectations

Dans Name

Rich was right, she did purposely kill T'kumva. Damn.

Dave Davenport (dogspunk)

That was a good discussion! I liked it. But, personally, I warmed up to the Orville after the first episode. While failing at comedy, it is still a better iteration of Star Trek than Discovery. I do not look forward for the remaining 15 episodes of STD (but I'll watch them anyway...)

Vincent

was gonna say "i will pay you guys to talk more about star trek" and then i realized that's exactly what im doing

Shappo

Kick ass episode, as always. Keep me updated on them Star Treks, nerds.

Phill Pratt

It was not ST. Hardly surprising, but still upsetting for us trekkies :(

Jared Blando

I was literally about to ask here on Patreon if Mike and Rich plan to do one. My girlfriend is a Trekkie (what a fucking nerd) and she thought it wasn't Star Trek enough.

Markus Huppert

I came, I saw Rich Evans, I came again.
