Worm Chow

I have another video coming your way, with more talking and information, but since it was Thanksgiving here yesterday, I thought you might enjoy this video of a worm eating their lunch. Each worm eats a cube of worm chow about that size (1cm X 1cm) about four times a day. They are HUGE, longer than my fingers, and any day now they'll stop this eating business and spin some cocoons.  When they do stop eating, it will be forever- the last food they will ever eat.  The adult silk moth emerges with no mouth parts, and it never eats or drinks.  This worm is bulking up to complete the whole rest of its life.

I also like this video because you can see their weird little bum-horns. They're soft, not real horns at all but still, what's that about?

(PS. I know that some of you who are using the Patreon App are having trouble seeing videos that are coming from Vimeo. I chose Vimeo originally because I wanted to be able to have captions, and that wasn't something that was available on this platform at the time. That might have changed, and I'm looking into it. I've complained to Patreon on your behalf (though you should too, if this is effecting you) and so far the best workaround is to go to the Patreon website, log in and watch there - it works fine. )

I love the sweet chomping noises! Clearly they are enjoying their meal! ❤️

Watching my monarch caterpillars over the summer munching away on their milkweed leaves is a bit like watching a typewriter - they're so weirdly fun to watch.
