Still with the worms
Added 2023-09-18 22:26:40 +0000 UTCHere's another picture of the worms, though even I have to admit that their scene is a little one note. Eat, rest, moult, eat, rest, moult - the only thing that is remarkable at this stage is the rather shocking speed that all of those things happen at.
Here's a quick picture of several silkworms - Most of them (the lighter tan ones) are 2nd instar - but there's one there on the food that's darker - you see him? (Her? Perhaps it is best to adopt they/them until they declare a gender) That one is likely a day or two ahead, and is (I think) 3rd instar. See how different they are, and how much larger? All the worms in this picture are seven, eight or nine days old - I took it day before yesterday.

There's also rather a lot of poop to contend with. This picture was taken just after they were given new food and I'm waiting for them to travel to the new food so I can clean their takeaway container. Tomorrow I'm trying something different, lining the new tidy container with the mesh from a bag of onions, and putting the food on that.* Hopefully now as they get bigger, I can just lift the mesh and move them to a new bin every time they get gross. Which is sort of all the time.
Anyway - still silkworm central around here. I'm ordering more worm chow.
Fondly,
Stephanie
*I am going to clean it very well first - they are still very fragile and vulnerable to any bacteria. I wash my hands a lot when working with them.
