Since a lot of people asked for more chess pieces I decided to go for the rooks. Their design was actually immediate for me, as I immediately saw the two rooks as two muscle girls for some reason, and I feel like it fits quite well, I think. I decided on the composition too with the two girls one next to each other right away, so the design was pretty straightforward.
The only thing I was kinda doubtful about was how to transmit the idea that they are rooks. I didn't want to put some thing a crown on their head cause design wise that would have made them look like queens. I decided that the square margins of the tower were the element I was going to use the most to transmit the idea. I decided to show the pattern on the hair, and I feel like that was an interesting choice. At first I thought to give them bobcuts so that the edges of the hair would have that shape, but I felt that made them look a little too masculine, especially considering their body type. I feel like the way the hair looks now is good enough.
The shoulder pads were a later addition since I felt that the silhouette of the design was too simple up to this point, they add to their powerful look and give them a more recognizable silhouette.
Not much to say about the rendering and lineart itself, I used a sketchy lineart and colored it rather minimally, mostly cause it was getting late and I wanted to finish the picture. Probably not the best rendering I've done, although I like the way the shadows look. I used a soft brush to paint in the shadow shapes slowly, and I feel like that gave a nice effect, one that I may actually use again in other art pieces.
