Small correction: I'm a Swede, and I learned about the AMOCs significance for our climate in elementary school back in the '70s. Also, I have the general impression that this is common knowledge, at least in my generation (X) and the previous (boomer). Of course, that's anecdotal evidence, so it doesn't mean that much, but there you go.

I have to disagree with Steve. The ability to store massive amounts of data is extremely easy today. First, just collecting it already means it's already being stored. Second, for a few hundred dollars, just copy it to a 32TB hard drive. That's peanuts compared to the overall cost of the research to begin with. What we lack isn't the ability or the time (have an intern do it), it's the will to do. I think researchers can't or don't want to be bothered, or even like the idea of having anyone go over their research. And there's probably some level of "this is my data, go get your own."
