This Weeks Patron Content - Confirmation Bias

This week Steve and I get into the details about confirmation bias. It's one of the core thinking errors in all of humanity.

We appreciate all of you and the support you bring to the SGU!

Thanks Mike!

The Skeptics' Guide To The Universe

I first came across this concept in the late 60's. It was in the first verse of "The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkel: I am just a poor boy Though my story's seldom told I have squandered my resistance For a pocketful of mumbles Such are promises All lies and jest Still a man hears what he wants to hear And disregards the rest

Culture blind or not that ship has sailed. That would legit start a burn-the-country-down war in America if that was attempted

My first ever time watching Patreon SGU content. Very glad to donate some money that way. Thanks for everything you do. I remember seeing Steve 'live' in London many years ago, providing extra quality evidence for me that he's real! One of the things I love about your SGU work is that it's true skepticism, without dragging in too much humanism etc. I'm sure some/all of you identify with those things too, but I really really like skepticism in its pure form (without too much other collectivism) and it's great. Like drinking good clean water instead of Pepsi. We're united over evidence etc.

Has anyone asked the question if it is a good idea for people to own land? (As opposed to the nation owning the land, people pay rent with all collected rent goes equally to the nation's citizens) This is something that has always puzzled me. Is this some kind of cultural blind spot or is my thinking messed up?

Ted Apelt

Confirmation bias is useful to make quick decisions based on incomplete information. In some cases ANY decision is better than “paralysis by analysis”. However, it is definitely NOT a good way to determine “the truth.”

Very cool but wish I could share this with non skeptics!
