More Content for 2023!
Added 2023-01-11 19:25:54 +0000 UTCHey guys,
Last year many of you requested that we make more content. Starting today we are now producing more content! Every Wednesday we will make a youtube video that you will get early access to. The new show will cover a single science topic and we want you to send us ideas for these shows. What topics would you like us to discuss? Steve and Jay will host the first round of this show and each epsiode will be about 10-15 minutes. We will post the link to the early access show in your patron feed.
Also, we are now making TikTok videos of Steve commenting on pseduoscience we find on the platform. You can go to www.tiktok.com/@skepticsguide to see our first posts. If you find a post on TikTok that you think Steve should comment about let us know. Email us at info@theskepticsguide.org
Thanks!
-Jay

2023-01-13 15:24:00 +0000 UTCHow much do we know definitely about what constitutes a healthy diet for humans (meat, processed sugar, salt, 5 a day etc.)?

2023-01-12 13:04:02 +0000 UTCTopic ideas : - How can all Homo sapiens have 99% identical DNA but people from outside Africa have 2% Neanderthal’s DNA and chimps be 98% identical to humans ? - Why is there a recommandation to use "single use paper tissues" (vs. fabric handkerchiefs) ? Isn't the main problem to wash your hands after use and not the fact that you store the tissue in your pocket vs. throwing it in the trash ? Is there any evidence/research on the topic ? - Is it truely bad to watch TV from too close a distance ? If yes, from which daily watch duration is it true ? - Wouldn't there be something smart behind naturopathy since pharma companies are only interested in investing in patentable molecules which thus leaves ? Haven't we "recently" (in the last 50 years) added to the modern SBM pharmacopeia a molecule purely "developped" by academics ? if not, why ? - Is it true that we don't know the mode of action of 50% of modern pharmacopeia ? - Is it true that milk accentuates motion sickness ? If yes, why ? (this is a common saying in France : https://www.doctissimo.fr/html/sante/mag_2000/mag0630/sa_1903_envie_vomi.htm). And what about Cola ? Does it help at all since there is no more coca leaves extract in it ? - Who is the most resistant to cold : the fat person (because fat isolate, see artic animals, etc.) or the strong persons (muscles make heat) ? - Is it true that fruits and vegetables have lost most their taste, vitamins, calories, etc. in the last decades ? - Do Herpes Lip Blisters really come when you are more stressed ? If yes, why ? - Are "Periorbital dark circles" really a sign of fatigue ? if yes, why? - Why is nail biting so common ? Was there any evolutionnary pressure leading to this particular behavior (rather than anything else...)or is it purely random ? Do we find this behavior universally accross cultures around the globe ? - Is it true that putting someone's prescription glasses for a few minutes can be dangerous for sight and eye health ? - Is Oenology a science ? Can it make predictions ? - Why is jam so long to "go bad" ? isn't sugar what bacteria love the most ? - Gross alert : When you have a throught infection, is it better to swallow or spit the mucus that tends to "come up"? - Gross alert : Is it so bad to pop pimples ? Isn't it a strategy of the body to gather pus (bacteria) in an area near the skin to help you get rid of it more easily ? - Gross alert : Is it bad to pee in the shhower ? Shouldn't the "almost" aspectic urine (and its uric acid) kinda "clean" the bathtub ? - Gross alert : Can you get any disease by sitting on a public bathroom ? Can the contact of your butt to the seat be responsible for any disease transmission ? It hsouldn't change anything as long as you wash your hands afterwards (and don't sractch your butt all day long I guess....) - Gross alert : Can you really get mycosis or warts at public pools ? If yes, does wearing flip-flops really help ? You don't have them on while you bathe and even so, pool's water would still "touch" your feet... - Does cooking food make it more caloric or the opposite ? If it doesn't change the calories, why was cooking so essential to our evolution then ? - For Steve : he mentionned once on the show how he approached teaching his kids skeptical thinking through questionning, etc. Could he dive deeper on that topic ? - For Cara : Is there any scientific basis to PCM ("process communication model") ? If not , why did they use it at NASA for so long ? What do they use now ?

2023-01-12 09:59:20 +0000 UTCIt would be nice if they checked the comments here on Patreon once and a while, but I don't think they ever do. Discord is slow, unintuitive, and very cliquey. Been following SGU almost from the beginning but never felt part of a community.

2023-01-12 07:48:01 +0000 UTCNo Tik Tok for me either... bad juju. YouTube is now doing "shorts" to compete with TT.

2023-01-12 07:37:40 +0000 UTCIs this content only going to be on Tik Tok? I have no interest in joining the service. Can it be embedded on Patreon or the Discord channel for patrons?

2023-01-12 00:23:06 +0000 UTCI keep seeing articles that have to do with a vaccine for some forms of cancer but haven't really dug in. Mostly because I don't really understand the biology of it other than cancer usually resulting in genetic degradation of our DNA. Hence cosmic radiation, and most other forms, are bad for us. If there was a vaccine how would it work. A call back to an earlier episode, could using CRISPR to blend the Tartagrade DNA for cellular regeneration in humans eliminate cancer as we know it, and would being mutated physically be worth it! Lol great show guys, I was a participant in the extravaganza here in Phoenix with my wife, and loved the show ~ Silver and Gold! 🎶

The Skeptics' Guide To The Universe
2023-01-11 23:04:05 +0000 UTCMy wife, a nurse, and many, many teachers I know believe in the lunar lunacy myth that the full moon affects people. I did a deep dive on it in university for a project (my professor was a huge skeptic and played a major part in me becoming a skeptic. The project was to present on a pseudoscience and explain why it’s wrong) but my wife refuses to listen to me on it. Maybe hearing it from you guys would help!

2023-01-11 20:00:45 +0000 UTCVideos that tackle science/skepticism fundamentals would be awesome. They could serve as a handy reference or shareable with non-listeners. Topics like name that logical fallacy, What is ‘P hacking?’, How is a double blinded study different from crappy research?, how to spot your own bias, etc.

2023-01-11 19:43:27 +0000 UTCit's been years (decade?) since I've heard any updates on research into dreaming. I remember when you'd see news stories about scientific findings on the subject, but the researchers have gone radio silent. 😯
