Bermuda is expensive probably because of many reasons. It's a small "country" with a very small local economy that requires lots of import. Cara is right there. Steve making a comparison to Connecticut doesn't work so well, Bermuda is an island where you either send goods over by ship or by air transport. Either way is very expensive due to economy of scale and the handling costs in the supply chain. The length of the voyage is less significant although it does play a role, but in Hawaii they have almost 1.5 million people so the volumes in transport are much higher. The finance industry also increases prices and salaries. Furthermore, a pretty steep import duty is applied to many goods, such as motor vehicles.

I used to live in Miami, and I know for a fact that the "Bermuda Triangle" (which I define as Bermuda - Miami - Puerto Rico) has some of the most violent and unpredictable weather on the planet, at least for the amount of traffic it gets. (Yes, nothing is worse that the Southern Ocean around Antartica, but very few people go there.) Combine that weather with the HUGE amount of traffic (Cruise ships often need to wait their turn to visit some of the most popular ports.), and it is not at all surprising how much can be lost with little or no trace. However, it is very safe if you are flying or cruising commercially because there is almost always someone within ten miles of you that can come to assist if you have an emergency. BTW, I was looking at Bermuda on Google Streets while listening to this podcast, and it is definitely one of the prettiest and most charming places I have seen.
