A few important messages!

Hey guys.

I have a few message for you as we enter the second half of 2020.

First, as usual I want to thank you for being a part of the SGU family. Most of us are dealing with extra stress this year and the world seems more unstable than usual. It's good to know that there are so many rational people out there (I'm talking about you). If you aren't on the SGU discord it's a great place to talk to other like minded people.

Next, please join us online this year for NECSS. NECSS is our annual conference but this year it will be a live stream. On July 31st the conference will open with a game show hosted by George Hrab that you wont want to miss. There will be special effects... On August 1st we will have speakers, panels and other events happening. This is 100% online so all you have to do is sign up, get some snacks and enjoy the show. Go to  https://necss.org/  for details and to register.

We also have a big announcement that will be coming out soon but I will tell you guys first. Ann Druyan will be our keynote speaker at NECSS this year! You can read all about her here  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_Druyan

Finally, two Patreon updates.  There is a tax update that starts tomorrow to online memberships like Patreon.  You might notice this in your monthly charge. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

I also found out today that Patreon is testing annual payments. They didn't say when it will be made active but its coming. I will let you know when I find out more.

I hope you all are finding some sanity and happiness wherever you are :)

As silly as this question might seem, registration consists of them asking only for your e-mail address and payment information, right? That seems to be the case--I gave my e-mail address, and it immediately asked for my credit card number. I want to make sure I'm not missing something or screwing something up, since typically registration involves gathering a lot more information (like, for example, your name). That said, I realize these are unusual times and registration for an all-virtual event might differ.

I had picked up somewhere that there will be VR elements to the event. If this is happening will there be an opportunity for those of us interested in this to test it? Last thing we need is to be installing the appropriate software and setting up accounts at the last minute.

Not really. It just normalises the default person as a male, making females the "other". I doubt that you (or anybody else) would see "Hey girls" the same way.

BTW, I recently listened to Ann Druyan's audiobook "Cosmos: Possible Worlds" (read by Ann herself). An excellent listen. Not just packed full of fascinating information, but some really personal stuff about Ann and Carl Sagan.

I was wondering the same thing. As I'm in the UK and usually work Saturdays, I might not be able to watch [all of it] live.

"Guys" is often used to include both men and women, these days. It's actually a pretty inclusive term.

Jay - I think you've mentioned it on last Friday's live show but can you confirm. Will NECSS 2020 recording be available for ticket holders for few weeks after the event? For folks like me, outside US timezones, staying up two nights in a row is a no-go.

Oliwia Bieniek

...I think I might actually be able to do it this year!! Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles!

Ironpossum

PeNdantic much? Lol

Nick Tessier

Thanks! <3

Great reminder about NECSS. I wanted to register after hearing about it in the podcast, but I was driving and subsequently forgot. All singed up now👍

Derek

Only the guys? What about your female listeners?
