I've just posted this to the SGU forum but thought I'd also post it here given the discussion above. I've just listened to the ep and enjoyed it. A few points. First, I think that a live audience expect a little more entertainment than is included in a normal episode. I attended the London live show and really enjoyed it. It's quite likely that some interaction with the audience was edited out, I think that was the case with the London show. I agree live shows (not just the SGU) aren't often as satisfactory from a podcast listeners' point of view, but that's often because the presenters aren't used to a live audience and their delivery is more stilted. At this stage the Rogues have a lot of live show experience and they seemed very relaxed, there was a lot of informal chat and ribbing of each other. Secondly, thinking about possible futures has to be a good thing. Businesses use a technique called scenario planning which involves thinking of different possible future scenarios and imagining how they could respond to them. The idea isn't to predict what will happen - as others have pointed out in this thread, it's obvious that no one knows - but instead to think through and plan how they should prepare and respond. The best plans are those which enable them to respond to a number of different scenarios and cope well with the unexpected. At its heart planning it's about thinking - as is scepticism - and anything that prompts us to think things through has to be good, right? Some public sector organisations also use scenario planning, by the way. Lastly I think it's naive to believe that either sector - government or business- is going to do the heavy lifting that's needed to tackle climate change. At least, they won't until it is very obvious that climate change has serious consequences: for example, that tens or hundreds of millions of people are dying and the planet is becoming increasingly unlivable and making it difficult for them to operate. Even in this situation it seems possible to me that ideology driven governments, funded by fossil fuel industries, will continue to deny climate change. Or they will at least deny that there is anything that can be done about it. But businesses will have a bigger incentive: their profits. If they can see most of their customer base dying within a foreseeable future (as someone pointed out above, they mostly think very short term and only then about profit), and appreciate that climatic changes make it more and more difficult to operate they might act to protect their future profits. Having no customers is really bad for business. Overall, I prefer regular episodes but variety is good, this made me think some more about the issues which have been discussed. And maybe thinking about and preparing for possible futures would be a good topic for a future SGU book?
