Aomori Nebuta Festival -- ねぶた祭

Have you heard of the Nebuta Festival in Aomori?

Held every August, this incredible celebration fills the streets with towering illuminated floats (Nebuta), vibrant music from drums, flutes, and hand-held cymbals (Chappa/Teburigane), and energetic dancers called Haneto leaping and chanting “Rassera! Rassera!” It is a true explosion of energy, color, and rhythm!

And here’s something special—Aomori, the home of the Nebuta Festival, is also the birthplace of the Tsugaru Shamisen that we are learning together.

The music of Aomori carries the soul of its people and the strength of its natural surroundings. While the instruments used in Nebuta and Tsugaru Shamisen are different, there is a shared fire—an intensity and raw impulse—that connects them both. You can feel it in the rhythm.Seeing Nebuta in person is a breathtaking experience—something that photos and videos simply can not capture. If you are learning Shamisen, we truly encourage you to experience it for yourself at least once. The pulse of the drums, the trembling air, the physical sensation of rhythm—it all feeds directly into how we express music through Shamisen.

みなさん、青森の「ねぶた祭り」を知っていますか？

毎年8月に開催されるこの祭りは、巨大な灯篭（ねぶた）が街中を練り歩き、太鼓や笛、手振り鉦（ちゃっぱ / てぶりがね）の囃子とともに、踊り手たち「跳人（はねと）」が「ラッセラー！ラッセラー！」という掛け声で跳ね回る、まさにエネルギーの塊のようなお祭りです。

そしてこのねぶた祭りの舞台、青森県は私たちが学んでいる津軽三味線のふるさとでもあります。

青森の音楽には、自然の厳しさや人々の暮らしの中から生まれた「魂のリズム」があります。ねぶたの囃子と津軽三味線、使っている楽器こそ違いますが、その根底には共通する“熱”や“衝動”があると私は感じています。

実際に現地で見るねぶたは、写真や動画では伝えきれない迫力と感動があります。三味線を学んでいる皆さんにとっても、ぜひ一度は体験してほしいお祭りです。リズム感、空気の揺れ、身体全体で音楽を感じる体験は、三味線の演奏にもきっと活かされるはずです。

またこのねぶた祭でのお囃子はねぶた囃子と言い、とてもキャッチーなメロディです。
