The lyrics of "Hanagasa Ondo" that are sung at the Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri today were completed through a public competition for new lyrics in 1963, ahead of the first Hanagasa Ondo parade (later known as the 'Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri'). Over 100 lyrics were submitted from both within and outside the prefecture, and 13 were selected along with 2 existing lyrics, resulting in 15 lyrics.

The "Hanagasa Ondo" was created for the Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri and incorporates the famous landmarks and specialties along the Mogami River, referred to as Yamagata Prefecture's "mother river."
During the Meiji and Taisho periods, the "Dontsuki Song" sung in the Murayama region of Yamagata Prefecture became the original song. Around the 8th year of Taisho (1919), during the construction of an irrigation pond in the suburbs of Obanazawa (Yamagata Prefecture), the song for matching the rhythm of the dontsuki work was mixed with "Wataridokata," a work song sung by construction workers, and "Funakata-bushi" and "Yagi-bushi", resulting in the newly sung dontsuki song, which is considered to be the "Hanagasa Ondo." However, it wasn’t until the early Showa period that it was turned into a folk song with lively accompaniment (shamisen, shakuhachi, and taiko).
The chant "Yassho Makasho" is said to have come from the rhythm used during the "Dontsuki" work. Some believe this same chant also appeared in the "Sakata Funakata-bushi" from Sakata City on the Mogami River's mouth, which may have influenced the song.
In the dance, participants hold a flower-adorned hat, representing the iconic "beni-bana" (safflower) of Yamagata, and dance. In the past, depending on the region, there were various dances, such as hand dances with hats or spinning dances with hats in hand, with more than 10 different variations. However, today these have been unified into one easy-to-learn Japanese-style dance, known as the new choreography "Seichou Hanagasa Odori ~ Kunpuu Mogamigawa" (commonly known as "Onna Odori"). Later, in 1998 (Heisei 10), a male version called "Seichou Hanagasa Odori ~ Zao Gyoukou" (commonly known as "Otoko Odori") was created.
Now, in addition to the elegant female dance "Kunpuu Mogamigawa" and the majestic male dance "Zao Gyoukou," there are various other dances including the "Kasa Mawashi-style Hanagasa Odori" from Obanazawa, and "Creative Hanagasa Odori," which participants personalize with unique styles.

現在、山形花笠まつりで歌われている「花笠音頭」の歌詞は、1963年の第1回目の花笠音頭パレード（のちの『山形花笠まつり』）に向けて新しい歌詞を一般公募し完成しました。一般公募では、県内外から100を超える歌詞が集まり、その中から13歌詞を選定し、従来からあった2歌詞を加えた15歌詞で構成されています。

山形花笠まつりのために考案された「花笠音頭」は、山形県の「母なる川」と呼ばれている最上川の流れに沿った、各地の名所名物を歌い込んだものになっています。
また、従来から唄われている「花笠音頭」は、別名「花笠踊り唄」とも呼ばれ、その起源については諸説あるようですがそう古いものではありません。
明治・大正の頃、山形県村山地方で歌われていた「土突 (どんつき) 唄」が元唄となり、大正8年頃に尾花沢（山形県）郊外のかんがい用溜め池工事の際に、土突どんつき作業をする時に調子を合わせるための作業歌に「渡り土方」が歌う船方節や八木節などがミックスされて、新しく歌われた土突き歌が「花笠音頭」だとされていますが、現在のように賑やかな伴奏（三味線と尺八、太鼓）を入れて民謡化したのは昭和の初期の頃です。
「ヤッショ、マカショ。」の囃子ことばは、その土突 (どんつき) の際の調子をあわせる掛け声から出たといわれ、また一説には、同じ囃子ことばが最上川河口の港町酒田市の民謡「酒田舟方節」にもあり、それを取り入れたともいわれています。
踊りでは、山形を代表する花「紅花」をあしらった傘を手にして踊ります。昔は地域によって笠をかぶっての手踊りや、笠を手に持って回して踊るものなど、10種類あまりの様々な踊りがありましたが、現在ではそれを一本化し、誰でも手軽に踊れる現在の日本舞踊的な新振り付けの「正調花笠踊り～薫風くんぷう最上川もがみがわ～」（通称：女踊り）が誕生しました。その後、平成10年（1998年）には男性的な踊りの「正調花笠踊り～蔵王ざおう暁光ぎょうこう～」（通称：男踊り）が誕生。
今では、華麗な正調女踊り「薫風最上川」、勇壮な正調男踊り「蔵王暁光」の他、花笠踊り発祥の地・尾花沢系の「笠回し系花笠踊り」や、参加者が独自に趣向を凝らした「創作花笠踊り」など、多彩な踊りが加わっています。
土地に根付いていた民謡がお祭りとなり、県内外よりたくさんの人たちが「花笠音頭」を楽しめるようになっています。ぜひお祭りの期間に山形県に足を運んで本場の雰囲気を味わってみてはいかがですか？
