Case 305: Marshall Street

When 25-year-old Josefina Rivera accepted a ride with North Philadelphia local Gary Heidnik on the night of November 26 1986, she could never have anticipated the events that were about to unfold. Josefina, along with five other women - Sandra Lindsay, Lisa Thomas, Deborah Dudley, Jackie Askins and Agnes Adams - were held captive in Heidnik’s basement while being subject to unspeakable crimes. But what really happened inside that house on Marshall Street?

Case 305: Marshall Street

Comments

Tough but great episode. I had to listen in installments because of the heavy content.

Sarah Daniel

Personally I don’t think Tony was just as much a victim as the women I don’t know what that defense lawyer was on

Alison

You still have time to delete this comment 😬

Annie G

its changed now

Oisin Maher

when is the case file bi-annual break? I need to start mentally preparing

Jen Olivares

This was a really hard listen! I skipped forward on bits as I was about to be physically sick!

Lynn Metcalfe

This one really made me uncomfortable, I nearly stopped at one point. Those poor girls. I was also more sympathetic towards Josefina than the other women were.

fiona liston

The things we do for love.

Green Thumb

I’m 30 minutes in & idk if I can finish this one. I hate descriptions about torture and sadism, last time I felt like this was gratuitous was with the girl in the box. 😔

J. Chips

I feel you. I love casefile and glad they cover these horrible cases. Thank you and don't stop. But im gonna have to skip it.

Katie McGhee

On par with Colleen Stan for me. The hole, omg 😬

Ali

This was one of the most difficult to listen to.

Emma Jane Young

2 hour casefile? The good ole days are here again.

Cathy Hughes

"women in USA go to government for everything" is not an accurate statement in the slightest. Women are statistically likely to be left alone as single mothers without child support from fathers and with little to no government support. The rest of your comment, and your other comments, suggest you have a real resentment and antipathy towards women. Not great!

AR

Really? You come onto the comment section of a story about men who literally tortured and killed women to whine about women abusing men? In a world where men abuse and kill women at a rate that women will never, ever come close to meeting? Says a lot about you, doesn't it? SMH.

Angela Still

AR has said nothing that isn't true. Also, this case isn't about women abusing men, so the what-about-ism isn't necessary.

Caiti

I will also note there is a difference between sexual /physical abuse and the rape, kidnapping, torture of these women.

Jennifer L

Let’s keep civil discussion. The comments by AR did not say that males did not experience abuse by women. The actual statistics: https://www.nsvrc.org/statistics https://www.cdc.gov/intimate-partner-violence/about/intimate-partner-violence-sexual-violence-and-stalking-among-men.html This does not indicate the gender of the abuser on men or if transgender. AR’s comments were factually correct and women have been disparaged in the public arena by politicians and provocateurs , on Twitter, etc. Women have also been taunted with words that demean by indicating men are the ones who get to decide what they do to their bodies after having legislatures determine that no pregnancy can be terminated even when a result of a crime like the man in the story. Women have a right to be concerned and it is a fact that the incoming US administration is not encouraging women’s health.

Jennifer L

Only 5 women.... I have seen 12+ locked up here in Asia. Lost, forgotten, ignored , some dead.

Sage Pirotess

I disagree. Women in USA go to government for everything, handing over freedom for perceived rights. But often women have little to no accountability. Your body, your choice, ok 98% of bonding is consensual. Women trash their freedom aside for cash in prizes. Usa.

Sage Pirotess

To be fair, he and company are from Australia

Sage Pirotess

My comment didn't say anything about abuse or abuse statistics. I was speaking of cultural change being reflected in political change, and all that unfortunately has a direct impact on the lives of real women, whether you want to call it playing politics or not. For my thoughts about (and support of) male abuse victims, see the comment I left on last week's Patreon episode in response to Sage Pirotess.

AR

Hey AR (KAREN) below, this is not a political platform. Get your facts straight. The amount of males being abused by women has increased exponentially in recent years. It's a tragedy when anyone is abused.

Bluechurch77

Philadelphia is the city, Pennsylvania is the state

Kristin Røe

Whew one of the survivors is a cousin to one of my coworkers from Allentown PA

Megan Osztrosits

Josephina did what she promised and got them out. Being there alone for the 1st days must have been awful. I cant imagine what any of those women went through 😥 some through drug withdrawal also. Such a tough listen. You see this sick stuff in movies but hard to believe lots of these are based on real life . Imagine attacking him and he died and you were left here 😥 Such a hard hard listen but so well told

Brilliantly said.

That first psychiatrist who testified. What a clown.

TheodoraTheExplorer

Woke up and saw this dropped. This is a heavy case, gonna have to buckle up. And a 2 plus hour run time!

Megan

I think the timing of this case, whether or not it was intentional, is really important. Here in the U.S. we're seeing a profound regression in women's rights, to the extent that a popular right-wing meme right now is "your body, my choice," referring to women having no bodily autonomy and potentially being raped. And the president-elect just chose the very unqualified random dude Matt Gaetz, who was investigated for sex trafficking and statutory rape, to be the upcoming head of our Department of Justice, in a blatant repudiation and dismissal of the concerns about him as a predator. Trump also said at a rally shortly before the election that he would protect women "whether they like it or not." Trump himself has been accused by dozens of women of sexual harassment, assault, and misconduct, and his re-election has sent a resounding message that those accusations just don't matter and he will face no consequences for them. Podcasters and influencers who make misogny part of their brand have become wildly popular, while "tradwives" are a growing phenomenon among women who seem eager to throw away their own freedoms and let men dominate them. And that's all on top of the stunning reversal of Roe v Wade and the abortion bans that have led to the preventable deaths of women all over the country, because the state wants to dictate how and when they give birth. We are rapidly reaching a place culturally where men like Gary Heidnick are not outliers, but rather an extension of a society that wants women to essentially be babymakers and sexual objects with no real agency over their own bodies. Thank you, Casefile, for a harrowing but necessary reminder of what that actually looks like.

AR

Not this other defense lawyer trying to claim that Tony being vaguely afraid of Gary made him just as much of a victim as the women who were held captive, raped, electrocuted and murdered 🙄

AR

Not the defense lawyer arguing that wanting to procreate with someone who's vulnerable or intellectually disabled is a sign of insanity 😵‍💫 nothing like good old-fashioned eugenics on top of all the obsession with race in this case

AR

This is such a difficult episode to get through, but I can't help but laugh at Terry Heidnick having a whole psychological criminal profile of his brother ready to go the moment reporters came knocking, complete with mention of head trauma 😭 this dude knew what was up 😶

AR

Difficult listen, well narrated and researched but won't repeat it.

Niki Walkey

Thanks for all of your hard work in bringing the public these well researched, perfectly narrated episodes. The classiest true crime pod of all time. You’re a national treasure!

Amy Novitski

Oh goody. A new episode

Christopher Worrel

What the actual fck. The depths of human depravity and cruelty never ceases to amaze me. I can't believe I've never heard of this case before. Completely traumatizing.

Siiri Sainio

30 mins in and takes me back to cases like the Toybox, House of Horrors and Collen Stan. Unfortunately can't bring myself to listen to this one for 2 hours and will give it a skip.
