Case 303: Duncan MacPherson

When 23-year-old Canadian ice hockey player Duncan MacPherson accepted a coaching job in Scotland, he was ready for his next adventure. But when Duncan failed to show up for the first day of his new job, serious concerns were raised about his well being. A desperate search led his parents Bob and Lynda to the Austrian Alps, kicking off a series of events they could never see coming.

That’s exactly my theory. They just hid it. I wish there was better justice for him and his family.

Hannah Daikhi

“When the grieving parents requested a statement, they waited six weeks before receiving a document in the mail that featured only a scan of a pair of hairy buttcheeks taken with a Xerox copy machine. They contacted the Austrian police for clarification, upon which they were sent another scan of the same buttcheeks, this time accompanied by a middle finger.”

I haven't yelled at my speaker while listening to casefile in a while... today was that day, what a frustrating case

The other point of view is that the parents know somebody ran their kid over, then threw him into an icy hole to avoid responsibility. Maybe I would want to hide the evidence of my mistake and do the same thing. I've never been in the situation of accidentally killing somebody

Heartbreaking

Marie Gough

phenomenal episode

Jennifer Kirker

so sad, his poor parents! just full negligence and coverups

Rissi Watson

What a horrible way to go. Sounds like the poor guy was alive when he was mangled by the snow grooming machine 😳

Ali

Couldn’t agree more AR.

These cases where a family has to deal with their loved one missing or murdered in a foreign country, especially one where the family doesn’t speak the language, absolutely break my heart.

Brenda Wells

I had a hard time with the Jamie Lavis episode, believing that someone would let a small-for-his-age 8 year old tool around on city busses on the regular by himself. 😳

Brenda Wells

Thought exactly the same!

Iain Strachan

This was my thought too

What strikes me most about this sad story is that his mom says she wants her faith in humanity restored, but this whole tale is *full* of strangers coming forward to help them. The hockey guy who pulled strings, the rich businessman and the Canadian search party, the girl in russia, the Innsbruck people who gave them tips and info, the lady who sent them her photos a decade later, just on and on. It just seems like no matter how many people tried to give this family answers, it's never been enough, and i know it's heartbreaking, but i came away from this ep thinking they want something that's likely impossible. Even if a snow groomer did hit Duncan, it's possible the driver wasn't even aware of it. It's all just so sad. And so frustrating, of course, that the police at every turn seemed so callous and dismissive and inconsiderate towards the family and the investigation -- but it's frustrating, too, that the family can't make peace with the answers they have. It's more than so many families get.

AR

It seemed insurmountable against those odds.

Well how else would they get to work..?? Hahaha jokes 🫨

I'm discerning a snowboarding pattern. Catch a bus as a toddler, ruin your knees in your 20's...

Michael Brodie

Wow! What a case! First of all, I'm feeling pretty clever with myself by using the Sherlock Holmes deductive reasoning to work out where he was given the drying jumper and remaining car. But that was just scratching the surface (so to speak)!! Pluse there's GlacierANON -they are out there GROOMING Snow!!

Michael Brodie

Awful story. It must have felt like one family struggling against an entire foreign nation to get justice for their boy.

TheodoraTheExplorer

2 mins in and WHO LETS A 3 YR OLD TAKE A BUS ALONE?!?

Nicole Lando

???

Never thought my hometown of Dundee would make an appearance on Casefile!

Iain Strachan

Just when I was beginning to like you.
