Case 260: The Alpine Manor Murders

The Director of Nursing at the Alpine Manor Nursing Home in Grand Rapids, Michigan was thrilled when Catherine Wood and Gwen Graham joined their team of nursing aides in the mid 1980s. They were hard working, enthusiastic and well-liked. But soon after they started, some residents of Alpine Manor began telling the staff that their lives were in peril. When those same residents began to pass away, their deaths were put down to natural causes. Was it old age that killed these residents? Or was there a more sinister explanation?

Case 260: The Alpine Manor Murders

Comments

I am shocked by the public's opinion of their sadistic killing. That screams volumes of how fallen the west has become. Elders are revered in the east, and loved deeply by their families. Kathy is a psychopathic murderer and will kill again, she likes it.

Lived in this area growing up and I vaguely recall comments about Alpine Manor in gossip, or stories from others. I was too young to understand. Now I got the full story from Casefile as I had forgotten all about it. Great Story though abhorrent people involved.

Morborg BR.

What a chamber of horrors.

I'm usually pretty thick skinned for things that other people aren't, but this episode was hard to listen to. I didn't reach the ending though, sorry Casefile. I hope that those women burn in hell and have had the most cursed existence in this world.

Sara

I imagine those people saying "what kind of life did they take away" would change their minds real quick if they were in those residents' position

Demi

I think you should modify the wording in 55:45 “medical examiner changed the cause of death from heart attack to homicide” to say “manner…from natural to homicide” or “cause…heart attack to asphyxiation”

Thank you for your kind words, Dave.

Amber

This case always motivates me to care for my health so I can live independently as long as possible. Terrifying.

Megan

I'm so sorry for your and your husband's loss, Amber. Indeed, the state of how we care for the elderly here in Canada is also a national disgrace.

DaveC

Yeah, the fact that they were so vulnerable made this case so much more horrifying to me, not less. I don’t know how people can hear about these people and not picture their own family members in such a position.

We recently dealt with a horrible nursing home with my husband's Grandfather (who was like a father to him). He went into a rehab facility for his hip, and they severely neglected him. They let him soil himself then would get angry when they had to clean him. They never did his PT that he needed for his hip, among so many other things. We had him transferred to an ER where they discovered he had a UTI, MRSA, gout in his spinal column and 2 horrible bed sores. His health rapidly declined after that and he passed away 2 weeks ago. The state of elderly care is absolutely abhorrent. Just because they are elderly, doesn't mean they are unloved or that they don't deserve comfort, dignity and to live their full lives.

Amber

So sad but a great case! I’ve never heard of it.

Katy Turley

The descriptions of the way the entire nursing staff seemed to become infected by the toxicity of these two is almost as scary as the actual murders themselves. Chilling.

I had deja vu from this case. It’s so similar to the Elizabeth Wettlaufer case. She was also a nurse working in a nursing home in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. She was convicted of killing 8 people and attempting to kill 6 others. She also happened to be a lesbian so a lot of the elements of the case were very similar. So tragic how often elderly people are victims of abuse or even murder

Monica

The reaction of the husband to his wife's crimes sounds just like people who said essentially "covid targeted only people who were going to die anyway". The uncaring world view of those from a certain side of politics.

Bob Trenwith

A very well done episode, but agree with other comments, it makes you scared of ever having to live in a nursing home.

Zac

Great episode, but makes me afraid to ever need a nursing home.
