Wow what a huge difference, no wonder I’ve been so confused. “Across the U.S., coroners are usually elected laypersons who may or may not have medical training, depending on local statutes.” Coroners in the US have a terrible reputation because they often have no training or forensic understanding. The better ones are at least funeral directors and the best ones being actual law enforcement. But they are never judges. All these years hearing about coronial inquests, I’ve misunderstood entirely what was happening. I’m glad to have a better understanding now, but I also wonder if that context could be worked in a little better for listeners like me who are familiar with a different system.

The explanation of coronial inquest is super fascinating. I think the US could do to implement a system like this, especially as Holly mentions, it tends to get to the actual truth rather than the legal truth.
