2023-06-14 12:45:14 +0000 UTCWow what a huge difference, no wonder I’ve been so confused. “Across the U.S., coroners are usually elected laypersons who may or may not have medical training, depending on local statutes.” Coroners in the US have a terrible reputation because they often have no training or forensic understanding. The better ones are at least funeral directors and the best ones being actual law enforcement. But they are never judges. All these years hearing about coronial inquests, I’ve misunderstood entirely what was happening. I’m glad to have a better understanding now, but I also wonder if that context could be worked in a little better for listeners like me who are familiar with a different system.
